'Venom' isn't done with 'The Last Dance' — Animated film starring lethal anti-hero in the works
Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, of the 'Final Destination: Bloodlines' fame, are set to bring back an iconic Marvel anti-hero. 'Venom' is set to return, this time in the form of an animated version. The news was confirmed by Deadline.
"No word on the plot of the new film, and there’s not a writer attached. Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are expected to return as producers following their involvement with the live-action Venom films, as is the film’s star, Tom Hardy, in some capacity," the outlet added.
'Venom' was the first of the trilogy that made headlines upon release in 2018. The franchise follows Eddie Brock (Hardy), an investigative journalist who becomes an anti-hero after an alien symbiote bonds with him. Created by David Michelinie and artist Todd McFarlane, the character first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man No. 300. Before the standalone series of films, Venom first appeared in Sam Raimi’s 'Amazing Spider-Man 3' with Topher Grace playing the role.
The 'Venom' franchise has been a critical and commercial success. The first film raked in more than $850M worldwide. Successful sequels in 'Venom: Let There Be Carnage' and 'Venom: The Last Dance' were released in 2021 and 2024 and grossed $506M and $478.9M, respectively. There is no word on Hardy's exact role in the animated film. For now, the possibilities are that he could voice Brock/Venom or be part of the production unit.
The latest comes on the back of Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman's comment on how 'The Last Dance' was indeed the last. "Let me tell you, when the last of the Spider-Verse movies comes with Phil Lord and Chris Miller, it’s going to be a significant event, as will the next Tom Holland Spider-Man film," the head honcho said.
"And when all the Karate Kid storylines come together with Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan, and a new young karate kid. For those fans, that’s going to be a significant moment. We have those. The third and last Venom is going to be huge." The third film, 'The Last Dance' ended on an emotional note, and the ending also hinted at closure for the character. Now, it remains to be seen how Lipovsky and Stein take Venom's journey forward.
