LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Food Network star Valerie Bertinelli has recently revealed that she has shed 10lbs so far this year. The 62-year-old was overjoyed to discover that her blue pants will now need to be sized down. Her participation in "Dry January," which is all about abstinence from alcohol, is what caused the weight loss.

The 'Hot in Cleveland' star also revealed that losing weight is simply one of the many positive "side effects" of her alcohol-free lifestyle. 'One Day At A Time' actress claimed, "These jeans that I'm wearing were so tight a few months ago that I couldn't comfortably button them. Now, they're so lose it's time for me to go down a size," as cited by Daily Mail.

Valerie Bertinelli previously stated that she needed to "heal" after discovering messages in which she was referred to as "fat and lazy." She made it very clear that the insulting comments were from her ex-husband Tom Vitale. Yeah, I like that side effect, replied Bertinelli, who seemed ecstatic about the whole thing. When a fan asked if she is feeling better, Valerie said, "I may also do dry July."

Why did Valerie Bertinelli give up alcohol?

The celebrity, who made headlines in 2009 after losing 50lbs, appeared on the cover of People magazine wearing a green bikini. But when she endured a traumatic divorce and witnessed the death of her ex-husband Eddie Van Halen, the weight slowly crept back on over time, as reported by Daily Mail. She stated she loved the experience so far when she declared in January that she was giving up alcohol. "I'm doing it for two reasons. One, I want to try and cut down the cravings for my sugar. And I think alcohol exacerbates that," claimed the TV star.

The actress stated that she wanted to be healthy overall. "I want to calm down the cortisol in my body that has been raging for the last five, six years. I've been in fight, flight, freeze, fawn mode. And I want to go into rest and digest," Bertinelli said. "I think cutting alcohol will help me do that." She also portrayed it as a fun challenge, saying, "If you're doing a dry January, let's have fun. Let's do it together."

'Keep doing what you're doing'

Meanwhile, Bertinelli's fans praised the actress on her "inspiring journey" on Twitter with one writing, "Been there! Took me many years to get to the healing & break the cycle for myself. Thank you for sharing & articulating it so well. Hopefully someone stuck in that space will see your vid & get some perspective. All the best to you, sweet lady Safe travels on your new journey!" Another wrote, "Amazing how gorgeous you are. Keep doing what you're doing." One user noted, "So nice of you to share your journey with others. It is so inspiring !" Yet another user shared a heartfelt message, "I just left my marriage of 31 years thank you for this."
