Why Uma Thurman was nervous about 'sensitive' daughter Maya Hawke becoming an actress
Uma Thurman revealed that she initially had her doubts about daughter Maya Hawke becoming an actress. In a recent interview, the ‘Pulp Fiction’ star said she was anxious about her 23-year-old daughter launching her acting career owing to her “sensitive” nature. “It's a complicated career,' she told Access. “One so much public facing often. And she's a sensitive person. I think any protective parent would be anxious for their child to sort of become to go into public arena, not because they want to be in the public arena but because they're so creative. I just wish they'd find any other way to be creative.” Thurman added.
Maya Hawke is a rising Hollywood star with an impressive mix of movies and TV shows in her bag. Uma also shared how it was basically her refined acting talent that eventually changed her mind. “She's, in the end, such a brilliant actress. Obviously there's nothing else that she would have ever done. Her talent. Her talent was so big, It's what she had to do.” Uma said when asked about what helped her loosen up to the idea of Maya having an acting career.

The Oscar nominee also said she didn’t offer any advice to Maya when it came to following a career in show business. “I think she knew more than me already,” Uma said on how her daughter took off her acting career without needing much advice.
Maya rose to fame as an actress with roles in ‘Little Women’, ‘Mainstream’ and was absolutely adored in the drama series ‘Stranger Things’ where she played the role of Robin Buckley since 2019. Maya has also previously admitted to her parents Uma and Ethan’s concerns regarding her decision to act. She said that her parents are especially nervous about the “public” aspect of a career in showbiz.
“They were wary of the public life side of acting and the difficulties of that. They also tried to protect me from falling into acting. They wanted to ensure I had a strong enough backbone, my own passion for it, and work ethic. They didn't want to cart me along every red carpet or have me do bit-parts in their movies. Once I was old enough, and it was clear they were my choices, they were very supportive.” Maya told The Guardian last year.
Maya is the daughter of Uma and actor Ethan Hawke, who were married from 1998 to the year 2005 she also has a brother named Levon Thurman-Hawke, 20. Besides acting the 23-year-old actress is also into singing and she released her debut album ‘Blush’ in 2020.
