'Tron' fans have every reason to rejoice. The latest installment from the cult franchise, 'Tron: Ares', will premiere on Disney+ on January 7, 2026. The sci-fi flick, serving as the standalone sequel to 'Tron: Legacy,' hit theatres this October. Starring Jared Leto, the actioner opened to mixed reviews from critics, but has still been one of the most-awaited movies on streaming platforms.

The story follows two organizations competing to bring the digital world of the Grid into the real world. Dillinger Systems, headed by Julian Dillinger (Evan Peters) intend to use the digital beings as war weapons, while ENCOM, spearheaded by Eve Kim (Greta Lee), looks for a more peaceful purpose. The plot then centers on Ares (Jared Leto), one of the supersoldiers from Dillinger's plans to experience reality. He links up with Kim and find themselves hunted by Dillinger and his squad.

The official synopsis of the Disney film reads: "'Tron: Ares' follows a highly sophisticated program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with AI beings."

Earlier, producer Justin Springer spoke about the 15-year wait between 'Legacy' and 'Ares' during his chat with Comicbook.com. "All the way back to Legacy, I was talking to Steven Lisberger, the creator of Tron, about what he was thinking when he came up with the idea of Tron,” Springer said.

"And he was saying, in the late ’70s and early ’80s, there was an obsession with aliens, and we kept feeling like we were close to this first encounter. And he was like, I always, he was living around MIT, and there was a lot of computer, new technology being developed on campus there…He said, ‘I started thinking about what if intelligent life didn’t come from outer space, but it came from inside the machine, and what if we created it, and what would that be like?’ And I thought, that’s a great concept for a movie."

"It’s really a first encounter film, more than anything else, and it’s not in outer space," Springer added. "But it’s from inside this machine, and we created it, and just because we created it, does that mean we can’t control it? And if we can, should we? You know, at what point does it become sufficiently advanced that it should be outside of our control?"

'Tron: Ares' releases January 7, 2026, on Disney+.
