Netizens on Twitter were in splits on February 2 morning as they watched a Fox News live broadcast of former US Congressman Trey Gowdy, of Spartanburg Trey Gowdy in conversation with Senator Lindsey Graham. The guest host’s stark resemblance to the American TV journalist Anderson Cooper was the reason for the hilarious situation.

In the video, Graham, the Republican US Senator from South Carolina repeated his warning not to call witnesses during former president Donald Trump’s impeachment process at the house. “We'll want the FBI to come in and tell us about how people actually pre-planned these attacks and what happened with the security footprint at the Capitol. You open up Pandora's box if you call one witness," said Graham in the viral video.

“Trey Gowdy is the My Pillow Guy of Anderson Coopers,” tweeted a Netizen, referring to Cooper's interview with Mike Lindell, sometimes referred to as MyPillowGuy, the CEO and founder of My Pillow Inc. who gained notoriety as an avid supporter and advisor to Donald Trump during his term as president and even after.

Who is Trey Gowdy?

Gowdy is a former politician and former federal prosecutor who served as US Congressman for Greenville and Spartanburg. He is now an American television news personality and is hosting a new show on Fox News from Monday (Feb 1) through Friday (Feb 5). Gowdy will host each from his home in the Upstate and have guests on to talk, according to Fox News. The show, called 'Fox News Primetime', airs live five days per week from 7 to 8 pm ET, with a rotating group of opinion hosts. A permanent host for the show will be named at a later date, according to Fox News.

Gowdy's congressional tenure was marked by central roles in high-profile investigations, most famously leading the House Select Committee on the events surrounding the 2012 attack on the US mission in Benghazi, Libya, where Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed. His committee spent over two and a half years and $7.8 million investigating the events surrounding the 2012 Benghazi attack, ultimately finding no evidence of specific wrongdoing by then-Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. Gowdy is married to Terri Gowdy, a schoolteacher. The couple has two children.

Twitter in splits

CNN reporter Oliver Darcy took a jibe at Gowdy, tweeting a snapshot of him with the comment, “Trey Gowdy is this week's tryout host for "Fox News Primetime."” Another said: "So Try Gowdy is Fox's version of Anderson Cooper now?" One Twitter user, Doug Monroe made tweeted, “So, is that the real Trey Gowdy or an SNL cast member ridiculing him in a sketch? Hard to tell.” “I agree Trey Gowdy is a copy of a copy of a copy. It’s said that Imitation is a form of flattery. But this is ‘Creepy’... @andersoncooper I think Trey has been spying on you,” said another.

Hilarious comments poured in as Gowdy was trending on Twitter during the day. "Trey Gowdy looks like someone going trick or treating as Anderson Cooper," said one person, while others commented on his hair, saying that he would "never look like Tilda Swinton". Another Twitter user compared Trey Gowdy's hair to that of Draco Malfoy's, a character from the famous Harry Potter movies.

While most indulged in the lighter side of the Trey Gowdy trend, many remained critical of Gowdy's show. “Trey Gowdy does a terrible Anderson Cooper imitation. 2) PLEASE bring in the FBI,” tweeted American psychologist Mary L Trump. Another trolled him as looking the result of 'an Anderson Cooper cloning experiment gone horribly, horribly wrong".
