Get ready for out-of-the-world stunts, Tom Cruise may become first civilian to spacewalk for new movie
CLEARWATER, FLORIDA: From flying planes to abseiling down the Burj Khalifa, Tom Cruise goes to any extent to make his movies stand out. An upcoming yet-to-be-titled movie might see Tom Cruise making history at the International Space Station, becoming the first civilian to spacewalk. Universal’s chairwoman Dame Donna Langley said the 60-year-old actor would be flown into space, after which he would descend from the rocket, and the entire experience would be captured on camera.
Langley explained to the BBC: "We have a great project in development with Tom that does contemplate him taking a rocket to the Space Station." She added, "And hopefully he will become the first civilian to do a space walk outside of the International Space Station."

More surprisingly, she spilled the beans on some aspects of Cruise's persona in the secret project. She said, "He will play a down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth." The project will involve a partnership between art and science thanks to the participation of Elon Musk's SpaceX and Nasa.
Doug Liman, who directed 'The Bourne Identity', will helm the picture, after directing a movie in Locked Down, featuring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Anne Hathaway. He explained, via Thrillist: "It connects to Locked Down because the same producer who a year ago came to me and said how would you like to try to shoot a movie in outer space?" He added, "That’s PJ van Sandwijk, and he’s the same person who said to Steve Knight and myself on July 1, what about you guys writing a movie for us to shoot in September?" He continued: "But here’s the thing. When a producer proposes something crazy to you, like, let’s try to shoot a movie in outer space, and Nasa and SpaceX sign on, and Tom Cruise signs on…you’re just a little bit more receptive when that same producer says I got another crazy idea, and that became Locked Down."
The director told Deadline, "I think the reason that Tom is such a superstar is, as much as we’re talking about making a movie not on Earth, I think Tom very much has both of his feet planted on the ground.
