LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The 65th Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 5, saw prominent faces like Beyonce, and Harry Styles, among others, winning the awards but the absence of K-pop sensation BTS at the ceremony left fans upset. The feelings doubled up when the band, who got nominated under the category ‘Best Pop Duo Group Performance', and ‘Best Music Video', was snubbed again and failed to take home an award for the third time.

The winner of 'Best Pop Duo Group Performance' was bagged by Sam Smith and Kim Petras for 'Unholy' and 'Best Music Video' was won by Taylor Swift for 'All Too Well: The Short Film'. However, this is the first time the band has been nominated in more than one category. Prior to this, the band was nominated for pop duo/group performance for 'Dynamite' in 2021 and 'Butter' in 2022, but lost it to Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande's 'Rain on Me', then Doja Cat and SZA’s 'Kiss Me More', reports Yahoo! Following last year's defeat, one of the member, RM, told, "I know there’s a lot of noises out there about our Grammys and the team itself. ... But, you know, why give a s— about it? Hating is their freedom, and they have their right to hate, but if it was me, I’d rather just talk with my friends in some cafe and forget about it — rather than tweeting about it or some interview. I wouldn’t do that ‘cause I’m a grown-up,” states the outlet.

'Grammy (scammy), don't deserve THE BTS'

Fans were left angry with the defeat. One of them wrote, "Snubbed again. It's ok because Army is much more than a stupid Grammy. You used them last year for ratings. This year not one member comes because they knew you would do it again. The most humble group in the world & you do them wrong again. So from Army 2 u FU!" Another wrote, "Grammy (scammy), don't deserve THE BTS." A fan tweeted, "It's ok, The Grammy's and some award shows here in US are not worth it anyway. They snub BTS no matter what. In any case we Fans are what they need and we bless & award our Purple Heart to BTS."

On the other hand, many called it a "shame," with an individual writing, "What a shame that for the continuous 10years work.. Grammy is very disappointing every year… We don’t need the Grammy, We have BTS." While one more concluded by saying, "Grammy you being unfair to BTS everytime and nominated them to gain audience traffic but actually you don't deserve BTS .. Our boys efforts and presence is more valuable and more pure compare to your trophy. They rule hearts not corrupt awards."

Why did BTS skip Grammys 2023?

The band of seven members—RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkookis currently on an indefinite break due to military enlistment and solo career commitments. In a statement released in October 2022, their entertainment company Bighit Music said via Variety, “The members of BTS are currently moving forward with plans to fulfill their military service. Group member Jin will initiate the process as soon as his schedule for his solo release is concluded at the end of October. He will then follow the enlistment procedure of the Korean government. Other members of the group plan to carry out their military service based on their own individual plans.” The statement further read, "With the release of their first anthology album earlier this year it opened the path to allow the members to take some time to explore individual projects. As part of the HYBE family, we support and encourage our artists and are beyond proud that they will each now have time to explore their unique interests and do their duty by being of service to the country they call home. After the phenomenal concert to support Busan’s bid for the World Expo 2030, and as each individual embarks on solo endeavors, it’s the perfect time and the members of BTS are honored to serve.”
