'The Righteous Gemstones' episode 4 sees Gideon locate the family treasure as Jesse unravels in Amber's presence
Spoilers ahead for 'The Righteous Gemstones' episode 4
'The Righteous Gemstones' episode 4 mainly rests on Jesse (Danny McBride) and Kelvin Gemstone (Adam DeVine) to keep us entertained. Kelvin finally finds himself being handed a responsibility directly by his father and in an attempt to show how capable he is to his father, Kelvin does some interesting things. This includes trying to rehabilitate a teenage daughter of a tither. Jesse, on the other hand, is still unaware he has been chasing his tail all this while, running around to find who the blackmailers behind the ransom calls were.
He came close yet again, to find his son Gideon Gemstone's connection to the blackmailing plot and was almost ready to pull the trigger of a gun that could have possibly killed his son if not for his wife Amber's interruption and here's how all of it unraveled. Gideon has finally got access to the most important part of his family's business - the donations. Every day, the Gemstones receive hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations and all of that ends up in a vault that is as big as a house and Gideon has finally found himself looking at all that money.
All that is left to do really is to plan and steal the money from under his family's nose. So he visits Scotty, his fellow blackmailer, to give him the good news. After a celebratory dinner, the two are driving as they bond over mary jane and beer when Gideon's father Jesse spots the red van. He recalls the red van from the night when he and his siblings went to meet the kidnappers and quite soon, the scene changes into a car chase where Gideon and Scotty's car meets with an accident. Even as Gideon and Scotty escape before Jesse realizes the presence of his son, Amber, who was with Jesse in the car all this while finally breaks her silence.
She asks her husband Jesse what this chase was all about and when he turns around and gives some lame excuse, Amber is forced to face the fact that her husband is not really the honest man he has always claimed to be. Just minutes before, when speaking to Chad and his wife Mandy who were facing problems because of a problematic email between Chad and Jesse, Jesse had assured them all of it was exchanged in jest.
There were no prostitutes, and ATL Jesse claimed was a movie. At the face of that lie at the end of the episode, Amber realizes that everything he said to her could be a lie. On a different note, there is a lot of banter between Jesse, Judy and Kelvin throughout the episode and is similar to Jesse's banter with his friends but all of that isn't particularly central to the plot. It, however, underlines their characteristics further.
For instance, when Jesse gets mad at Chad for not deleting the email exchange, he is aggressive and brutal. Just as he is with his sons when they do not oblige him. This indicates how selfish and entitled Jesse is. Also, the episode left us wondering about the animosity between Eli Gemstone and Johny Seasons? Was what we saw in episode 3 the last of it?
Episode 5 of 'The Righteous Gemstones' airs Sunday at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.
