'The Magicians' Season 5 Finale promo shows gang use the World Seed to end quest but some arcs need tying up

The finale episode will have to tie up quite a few loose ends and we are not quite sure how they are going to cram everything in before the Syfy series ends

This is it guys. After 5 seasons of some inventive plotting that kept us on our toes, 'The Magicians' is ending. However, even after the grand musical episode last week, there are so many loose ends that we might have to be prepared not to have everything tied up as neatly as we expect in a series finale episode.

The trailer is pretty definite flashing the words: "Quests end. But Magic is forever." Fans would agree. But on the quest side of things, after Fen successfully saved the World Seed by stashing it in a rather awkward cavity in the last episode, it is Mission Apocalypse.

In order to defeat the Dark Lord (Sean Macguire) aka Rupert Chatwin, the gang has decided to make Fillory go ka-boom and shift Fillory's population to Umber's pocket world with Ember's posthumous blessings.

But this also means Jane Chatwin (Esmé Bianco) won't be just one portal entrance away. As she tells Penny Adiyodi and Plum Chatwin, her descendent: "I'll still be here. I'll be a little harder to find." We also see Alice Quinn (Olivia Dudley) bidding Zelda (Mageina Tovah) goodbye.

The synopsis of the finale episode is pretty cryptic, only letting us know that "Christmas comes early". An early promo picture shows the gang sitting under the Christmas tree, unwrapping presents at the penthouse HQ. Julia Wicker (Stella Maeve) stands out in this jolly gathering with her gigantic pregnant belly. She looks ready to pop.

And we do see her about to give birth to her Traveller baby in the trailer. We also see Dean Fogg (we don't know if this the sane one or the crazy one from the alternate timeline) severing the energy umbilical cord between her and the baby. That is one less thing to worry about.

There is also a small moment where we see Rupert Chatwin open a door and drag someone in -- does he succeed in the end in rescuing his love, Lance, from the Underworld? It sure looks like it.

We also see Hyman Cooper, the ultimate voyeur of Brakebills, who thrives on the stories unfolding around him, put his stamp of approval on this final installment, exclaiming: "this is the best episode ever".  Don't ever say 'The Magicians' have been scared of going meta.

The final few minutes of the trailer shows the seed opening, bursting forth its world-building golden light, with Eliot and Kady shading their eyes. One person (unidentifiable from his back profile) who is also near the seed flies back after the seed's explosion after lying dormant for so long.

While we don't expect all the loose ends to be tied by the end of the episode, we do hope the show finishes some arcs. One, Plum Chatwin's feud with the other mysterious Time Traveller who siphoned off her magic blood plasma. Two, Dean Fogg stuck in the Etheric Realm -- does he finally make it out of there. Three, what happened to the Visigoths who raided the Library, forcing Zelda to set everything on fire? Four, what happens to Magic? We know it has been wonky ever since the gang's Moon escapade, but will it ever get back to normal?

And lastly, we hope we will get some long-term resolution to Julia and Penny's off-again, on-again relationship, despite Julia's pregnancy. In fact, we'd like some closure about the future of all the couples on the show. Here's to the finale episode satisfying all our questions.

'The Magicians' airs on Wednesdays 10/9c on SYFY.
