LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: If you believed that ‘The Last of Us’ was lacking a bit of action, well, Episode 5 would have undoubtedly erased that from your minds. The fifth episode, titled ‘Endure and Survive’, is undoubtedly one of the most action-packed episodes of the series so far and features an epic fight between the humans and the infected. Last week’s episode introduced us to The Hunters and its leader, Kathleen (Melanie Lysnskey).

However, it also gave us a glimpse of a creature that was lurking beneath the ground and was eager to come out. Unfortunately, the creature manages to get out of the ground in tonight’s episode and wreak havoc in Kansas City. If you have played games, then you know what that creature was, but most of the people watching the show don’t know what it was and why it was so different than all the infected we have seen before. Well, let’s take a look at how did the creature come out and why they look so different.

How did the creature come out of the ground?

First things first, the creature goes by the name of Bloater and is very much different from Eunners and Clickers. So, in one of the sequences, Joel, Ellie, Henry, and Sam are trying to get out of Kansas City, but they are stopped by an old man with a rifle. Joel discovers that an old man is shooting at them and gives him a chance to hand over his gun to him. However, he doesn’t listen and Joel is forced to kill him. As soon as the old man, a bunch trucks arrive there and it looked like Kathleen, along with the members of the group, would kill all four of them.

However, things turn upside down when Kathleen was pretty close in killing Henry and a truck falls into the ground, making everyone wonder if that cracked ground has been breached. To their horror, the crash opens up the ground and a swarm of infected coming out of the ground. Also, we see the newest version of the infected coming out. When you look at the creature for the first time, you’ll realize why that creature is so hard to kill and wants to blow everything up.

Why are Bloaters so different from other versions of the infected?

As mentioned above, the huge creature introduced in Episode 5 is called a Bloater, an iconic infected monster that also features in the video game series. The situation has been changed in the series because Joel actually finds a bloater in the sewers beneath a hotel in Pittsburgh rather that in the suburban area of Kansas City. The biggest change in the storyline takes place when we see that the Bloater they encounter in Kansas City is actually the first time they are encountering a much bigger creature.

However, in the video game series, Joel and Ellie encounter a Bloater in Lincoln and they team up with Bill to kill the bloater while they were searching for a truck battery. When it comes to the difference between the others infected and Bloaters, it’s very simple that Bloaters have been infected for a very long time and that’s why they look like that and have a strong shell around their body.

Runners seem to be the first stage of the infection and emerge anywhere between 12 and 48 hours after they get infected. On the other hand, the next stage is Clickers. They are the ones that begin to grow fungal plates on the outside of their heads. Finally, there are Bloaters and they are created almost after a decade after a person is initially infected. This is the main difference between a Runner, Clicker, and a Bloater.

'The Last of Us' returns to HBO with a new episode every Sunday at 9 pm EST.
