'The Good Doctor' Season 3 Episode 5 touches upon the issue of gun control and offers compromise as the best solution

Despite being a medical drama at the core, Season 3, Episode 5 of 'The Good Doctor' weaved in the sensitive issue of gun rights and gun control very subtly, and it was impressive

The article contains spoilers for Season 3 Episode 5

Here’s a perspective to start with. Doctors, medical practitioners, and therapists are considered almost next to god. We entrust our lives to them and perhaps, that's why, at a subconscious level, we can never imagine violence surrounding the medical fraternity.

So, obviously, we would never associate them with gun rights. In season three of 'The Good Doctor', while we were all waiting for Shaun's big day, the evolution of his and Carly's relationship, or what changes Claire’s character would go through, episode 5 suddenly adds the angle of owning a gun.

It starts when Dr. Glassman finds out that his soon-to-be-wife, Debbie is an ex-marine and, you guessed right, she has a gun. Even after he installs a high-security alarm system in his house, thinking that it might help her let go, she insists that for her, owning a gun is not a pleasure or a status symbol, but who she is.

Although Dr. Glassman is ready to compromise on a few things, deep down inside, he is disturbed. He even takes it up with his juniors and colleagues at the hospital break room, where Morgan and Claire share their individual (and quite opposite) experiences of how guns in a relationship could be detrimental.

Morgan is all about gun rights, whose boyfriend left her because she had one, while Claire left her boyfriend because he owned one.

Later, at his house, Dr. Glassman toys with his wife's gun when she walks in and decides to talk about it. They kiss and makeup and Dr. Glassman says that he is learning how to compromise. Perhaps, that is what is needed in real life as well, to address the pertinent social issue.

Technically, there was no conversation around what one should or should not do about gun control, but if you read between the lines, there is a message.

Without taking any sides, let us just say that it is indeed promising to see that despite being a dramatic and intense story that deals with serious medical conditions and emotions of medical professionals, 'The Good Doctor' has not forgotten what "doctors" generally stand for.
