'The Glorias': Release date, plot, cast, trailer and all you need to know about Gloria Steinem's biopic on Amazon Prime

'The Glorias' is the latest biopic that tells the story of feminist icon Gloria Steinem. Based on Steinem's autobiography 'My Life on the Road', the movie begins with her life as a young woman in India up till the women's rights movement of the 1960s and '70s. The multi-starrer movie explores Gloria and her contribution to the feminist movement through actors at different stages.
Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, Lulu Wilson and Ryan Kiera Armstrong all portray Steinem at different stages of her life. Here's everything you need to know about the movie.

Plot
According to the official synopsis of the movie: "Journalist, fighter, and feminist Gloria Steinem is an indelible icon known for her world-shaping activism, her guidance of the revolutionary women’s movement, and her writing that has impacted generations. In this nontraditional biopic, against the backdrop of a lonely bus on an open highway, five Glorias trace Steinem's influential journey to prominence — from her time in India as a young woman to the founding of Ms. magazine in New York, to her role in the rise of the women's rights movement in the 1960s and beyond."

Julianne Moore as Gloria Steinem

The award-winning actress (one Academy Award, two Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes) is set to play the role of the iconic feminist. She features heavily through the trailer so it could be said that we follow her for a large part of the movie. Moore is known for her work in 'Still Alice', a role for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress, and 'Game Change', a portrayal of Sarah Palin that won her an Emmy Award. She was named Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for 'Maps to the Stars'.
Alicia Vikander as 20s-40s Gloria Steinem

The Swedish actress will be playing the younger version of Gloria Steinem. Vikander is also the recipient of several awards such as the Academy Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award. She was also nominated for two Golden Globes and three BAFTA Awards. The actress is best known for her work in 'A Royal Affair', 'Pure', 'The Danish Girl', 'Tom Raider' and 'Jason Bourne'.
Lulu Wilson as Teen Gloria Steinem

The 14-year-old Wilson is known for her work in horror films 'Ouija: Origin of Evil', 'Annabelle: Creation', and the 2018 adaptation of 'The Haunting of Hill House' which is loosely based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson.
Bette Midler as Bella Abzug

Midler plays the role of Bella Abzug, an American lawyer, US Representative, social activist and a leader of the Women's Movement who had joined other leading feminists such as Steinem, Shirley Chisholm, and Betty Friedan to eventually found the National Women's Political Caucus. The actress has won several accolades over the course of her career including winning four Golden Globe Awards, three Grammy Awards, three Primetime Emmy Awards and a Tony Award.
Janelle Monáe as Dorothy Pitman Hughes

Monáe plays the role of Dorothy Pitman Hughes, an African-American activist, pioneering African-American small business owner, and the co-founder of Ms. Magazine. The Grammy-nominated rapper, actress and producer is known for starring in 'Hidden Figures', 'Moonlight', and in the upcoming 'Homecoming'.
Lorraine Toussaint as Florynce Kennedy

Toussaint plays American lawyer, feminist, civil rights advocate, lecturer and activist Florynce Kennedy. The actress is known for her work in 'Breaking In', 'Law & Order', 'Crossing Jordan' and 'Saving Grace'. Her other recognized roles include that in 'Selma' and for playing the role of Yvonne 'Vee' Parker, the main antagonist in Netflix's 'Orange Is the New Black' Season 2 (a performance that earned her critical acclaim and a Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series).

'The Glorias' is based on Steinem's own memoir 'My Life on the Road' and is directed and produced by Julie Taymor. The screenplay for the movie is written by Taymor and Sarah Ruhl. Taymor, a recipient of the MacArthur Genius Fellowship, counts among her credits movies including 'Oedipus Rex', 'Titus', 'Frida', 'Across the Universe', 'The Tempest' and 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.
