'Nancy Drew' fans think Scott Wolf's Carson Drew is too mild-mannered and lacks chemistry making the character a 'mistake'
Spoilers ahead for The CW's 'Nancy Drew' premiere
It is safe to say that The CW's 'Nancy Drew' does not disappoint in the conventional sense. Based on the titular character of the mystery books that influenced a generation, The CW's latest rendition springs a decent mystery in the lap of a lackluster plot and sexualized characters.
Kennedy McMann's debut performance as Nancy Drew is palatable. After the untimely death of her mother, Nancy, unable to face the grief, takes a gap year waitressing at The Claw and counting the days till she can reapply to college.
Her decision to take a gap year goes hand in hand with her decision to keep away from mysteries too — this is the year that Nancy Drew won't solve anything.
However, the murder of socialite Tiffany Hudson right outside The Claw under mysterious circumstances pushes her to get back into solving crime.
Nancy doesn't work alone though — George (Leah Lewis), Bess Marvin (Maddison Jaizani), Ace (Alex Saxon), Ned 'Nick' Nickerson (Tunji Kasim) are all somehow involved in this murder.
And because we are watching a CW production, 'Nancy Drew' has Dead Lucy, the ghost of Lucy who wore the crown of Horseshoe Bay's Sea Queen for just one night in 2000. Following a few clues leads the group to believe that Dead Lucy is haunting their investigations.
While the show has been facing mixed reactions over its creative changes, one particular contemporary aspect that didn't sit well with us either is Carson Drew, played by Scott Wolf ('Party of Five' fame).
Carson is a complete flip of the criminal lawyer from the books. In The CW's 'Nancy Drew', Carson shares a tumultuous relationship with his daughter following the death of his wife.
While they are at loggerheads most of the time, halfway through the pilot Nancy also discovers that her father is with Detective Karen Hart (Alvina August). She is also hurt that her father has moved on so quickly from her mother.
Their relationship therefore further deteriorates after this discovery as Nancy herself is having a hard time coming to terms with her mother's untimely death.
"There seems to be a lack of chemistry in general from what I saw in the first episode. But going with the 'Party of Five' guy was their biggest mistake. Hopefully, there is a major improvement with the next episode because I didn't feel like this was a great introduction. The storyline is intriguing enough for me to stick around for a bit longer but definitely won't make me an avid watcher," said a fan.
Nancy Drew is in conflict throughout the pilot episode. If her rebellious streak is going to take such a color then the changes made to Carson Drew seem to be added to incite more conflict, unnecessarily, shared a fan.
Another noted, "Nancy Drew allows a beautiful legacy. Passed down through the family. Considering they've ruined Nancy and Carson's relationship, I can see that the #CW doesn't care about families."
But that is not all. Wolf's Carson is a softer version from the one Drew readers have been well-versed with all these years.
"I personally really like Scott Wolf, but I do agree that he's lacking some kind of oomph for me so far. He's almost too soft-spoken, too much of a doormat (and often plays characters like that). I'd like to really see his character be stronger and more authoritarian as the dad," pointed out a fan.
While that could be owing to Nancy's flippant nature so far, it is not an exciting trait in a thriller. 'Nancy Drew' airs on Wednesdays at 9 PM ET on The CW.
