The "revenge dress" is a dress once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales. It was worn for the first time at a 1994 dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens. The garment has been interpreted as having been worn "in revenge" for the alleged televised admission of adultery by her husband Charles, Prince of Wales. The dress is an off-the-shoulder black silk evening gown, was designed by Christina Stambolian. In the book, 'The Diana Chronicles', Stambolian compared Diana's choice of black to the black swan Odile in Tchaikovsky's ballet 'Swan Lake', saying that Diana "chose not to play the scene like Odette, innocent in white. She played it like Odile. She was clearly angry." Diana had owned the dress for three years before she wore it, fearing it was "too daring." The dress reportedly cost 900 pounds. Diana had planned to wear a dress by Valentino before choosing Stambolian's design. According to Vogue, Anna Harvey, Diana's former stylist, said that Diana "wanted to look a million dollar and she did."
Debicki recently revealed how pressurizing it was to pull off the iconic dress and the process of achieving the look to Vogue. She said, “The revenge dress was pressure.” (She'll be seen wearing a replica of the black, off-the-shoulder Christina Stambolian creation). When Debicki was asked how were the fittings, she revealed, "Lengthy. It’s a complex dress. I let the fittings happen around me while I thought about what the dress meant. Why this dress? She’d had it for two or three years. It was super risque at the time.” And? “She was claiming the space. The way she walked out of that car, the luminosity, the strength of her as that car door opened, she was so fast and so forward. It’s an extraordinary thing to watch. To decide what you’re saying about yourself through fashion… it was a currency. An incredibly powerful currency.”
Therefore, fret not as you will witness the replica of the iconic revenge dress in the recent season of 'The Crown.'
