'The Chi' Season 3 Episode 2: Meet the new chef in town, Dominique 'Dom' Morris played by La La Anthony
Spoilers for 'The Chi' Season 3 Episode 2 'Brewfurd'
If it was Miriam A Hyman as Dre and Luke James as Victor Trig introduced as the new characters in the season opener of 'The Chi', it was 'Power' star La La Anthony marking her debut in the Showtime drama as Dominique Morris or better known as Dom in 'Brewfurd'.
Introduced as a talented chef running a trap kitchen (Read it as time to forget Jason Mitchell's Brandon), the storyline starts with Emmett Washington (Jacob Latimore) tasting a dish Jada Washington (Yolonda Ross) brings when she comes home to meet Tiffany (Hannaha Hall). After finding the food to be downright delicious, Emmett finds out the address to get the chef to work for him.
The audience gets a pleasant surprise when Dom (Anthony) opens the door and the duo gets off to a rather bit of a frosty start. The scene also evokes a few laughs when Dom asks Emmett to prove his name was indeed Emmett by asking him to "show his d**k". She adds: "The word on the street is you walkin' around with a third leg. So if you say, who you are is who you are, then lemme see it." A dumfounded Emmett remarks, "You're lucky, I'm desperate" and does give her a peek.
Dom takes Emmett through her trap kitchen and over a few flirty innuendos, he makes the offer of asking her to work as a chef for his catering business. It is easy to term Dom as a straight-talking, no-nonsense woman after she slams Brandon calling him a piece of s**t. After sampling her cooking again, he pitches the offer again and says the profits will be split 50-50. A mesmerized Emmett watches as she whips up a quick meal and then she watches as he enjoys every morsel of the food, including the peach cobbler.
"I do it for the culture," she says and that already explains a lot about where Dom comes from. The fact she's not working in a plush restaurant or for the money shows she's proud of where she's from and the culture she surrounds herself in. The final minutes of the episode see her agree to work with Emmett as they choose Sonny's as their base of operations. The plan is to make it a night joint for those out looking for a meal. "I want to build my legacy," Emmett says and that convinces Dom marking the start of a professional relationship.
It's debatable to see if this goes beyond the cooking and the business. For starters, it was evident Emmett had the hots for her and should this end with a personal and intimate story, safe to say Emmett's in big trouble. Again. However, this also establishes Anthony's character gets a multi-episode arc. For now, IMDb states she's part of five episodes and that means there are four more episodes where the audience will know a lot more about Dom and her personality.
So, maybe it is time we say, "Move over Brandon. There's a new chef in town."
'The Chi' airs Sundays 9 pm ET on Showtime.
