LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Netflix is gearing up to release Season 3 of its popular series, 'Sweet Tooth'. This highly anticipated installment promises to be a significant moment for fans as it marks the final chapter of the beloved series.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world where a mysterious pandemic has devastated civilization, the series follows Gus (Christian Convery), a young boy who is part human and part deer, known as a hybrid.

As these hybrid children come into the world, a deadly virus known as the H5G9 virus ravages humanity, leaving devastation in its wake. Amid this chaos, strange purple flowers begin to bloom, their origins and purpose remain a mystery.

The H5G9 Virus, commonly referred to as the Sick in 'Sweet Tooth', spreads rapidly and causes widespread illness and death among those infected.

Ahead of the premiere of Season 3 on Netflix, let's discuss what really caused the virus and the clues revealed in Season 1.

Virus outbreak precedes Birdie's lab raid in Season 1

In 'Sweet Tooth' Season 1, Episode 7, 'When Pubba Met Birdie', a news report mentions an early and rapidly spreading flu season in the Midwest. Dr Aditya Singh (Adeel Akhtar) initially misidentified the H5G9 virus as the flu due to their similar symptoms.

The early spread of the H5G9 virus before the Fort Smith raid was a minor yet significant hint about the origins of the virus. It is reasonable to conclude that the virus existed before the raid on Birdie's (Amy Seimetz) lab, as indicated by its early spread. Therefore, it is impossible for the virus to have spread as a result of Birdie's experiment.

Another possibility is that an employee at Fort Smith Labs contracted the virus, potentially leading to the lab raid. This possibility could be further explored in 'Sweet Tooth' Season 3, offering viewers a deeper insight into the events leading up to the raid and the origin of the virus.

Purple flowers and virus appear together in Season 1

In 'Sweet Tooth' Season 1, it was revealed that purple flowers started growing near areas where people were infected with the H5G9 virus.

There is a misconception among people that the hybrids are responsible for spreading the virus. Dr Singh is shown dissecting hybrid children in an attempt to find a temporary cure.

On the other hand, a prevailing theory among 'Sweet Tooth' fans suggests that the purple flowers might actually be the secret cure for the H5G9 virus.

However, it appears that the purple flowers could be a result of the same genetic manipulation that led to the virus. These flowers may be an unintentional but crucial element, containing the key to understanding both the cause and the solution to the pandemic.

Why may some people be immune to the virus?

The hybrid children appear to be universally immune to the sickness. It hints at a deeper connection between the hybrids and the virus, suggesting a possible genetic link or alteration that grants them this immunity.

Bear (Stefania LaVie Owen) lived with her foster parents, who died from the virus, but she never contracted the virus herself. This suggests that there may be individuals who are naturally immune to the virus.

It is possible that hybrids are somehow connected to the virus, granting them immunity and the ability to live freely.

Did the virus and hybrids originate from lab experiments?

In 'Sweet Tooth', Judy (Jodie Rimmer), a woman who worked with Gus' mother, Birdie, at Fort Smith Labs, described the virus and the hybrids as "two sides of the same coin."

Her comment suggests that they are actually deeply intertwined and dependent on each other in some fundamental way. It could also suggest that the hybrids are a direct result of the virus, perhaps created as a means of survival or adaptation in response to the virus's effects.

After Gus discovers that he was a test tube baby created at Fort Smith Labs, Judy implies that the virus was another project being researched currently.

The outbreak of the Sick and the birth of the first natural-born hybrid children occurred shortly after a Fort Smith science team's discovery of unique microbes in Alaskan ice.

Birdie's intention was to use these microbes to create vaccines for hantavirus. However, one of these experiments inadvertently led to the creation of Gus.

This suggests that hybrids and the Sick may have originated from the lab.

Did 'Sweet Tooth' Season 2 reveal the origin story of the virus?

In 'Sweet Tooth' Season 2, Gillian Washington's (Robyn Malcolm) team retrieved ice samples from Alaska, the same cave where her grandfather had searched for a cure for a degenerative muscle disease but tragically died.

In an attempt to develop a vaccine for Gillian's illness, they tried to use the microbes from the ice by injecting them into chicken eggs. However, this led to the unexpected discovery of a heartbeat inside one of the eggs, which eventually resulted in the birth of Gus.

Gillian decided to inject herself with the modified microbes. Instead of curing her muscle disease, Gillian inadvertently became the first known case of the H5G9 virus.

In 'Sweet Tooth' Season 3, there is potential for the storyline to delve into the fate of the first victim of the virus and the search for a potential cure.
