The Lena-Kara friendship has been quite a seesaw in Season 5 of 'Supergirl'.

Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath), who has already been betrayed and hurt by several close friends in her life, was less than pleased to know that her best friend Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) was actually Supergirl, and had hidden her identity from her.

Lena withdrew into her shell again, but not without spouting some ice-cold venom at Kara. "I wasn't a villain. You shouldn't have treated me like one." Remember that epic dialogue?

Well, since then Kara has been harboring feelings of guilt and remorse for her ex-BFF, who seems to be now working with the recently resurrected Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer).

In the landmark 100th episode of The CW show, with the help of Mxyzptlk, Kara explores numerous timelines where she could have told Lena the truth before. Would it have changed anything? And if so, how?

Turns out, a LOT. In one timeline, Kara tells Lena that she is Supergirl, just at the start of their friendship. Things seem to go well — Lena and Kara save the world a million times over.

Unfortunately, this rosy paradise doesn't have a happy ending as Lena is abducted and questioned about Supergirl's identity by some all-too-familiar villains. Heartbroken, Kara wishes that she had never even met Lena.

That's another ugly possibility, as that alternate timeline Lena is pure evil. Throughout the episode, Kara desperately looks for the right time to tell Lena that she is Supergirl, but it seems to backfire every time. Lena is furious and betrayed and almost leaves her to die in one of the scenarios.

Finally, Kara realizes that what is done is done and that she can't keep feeling guilty and responsible for Lena's consequent actions.

Kara makes a firm decision and goes to Lena and tells her that if she continues with her evil plans, then Kara will have no other opportunity but to fight her. The powerful moment of the episode lies in Kara's epiphany that she will not feel guilty anymore.

'Supergirl' airs on The CW on Sundays at 9 pm.
