'Supergirl' Season 5: From Lena-Kara dynamics to mysterious Leviathan, how the season has shaped up ahead of looming Crisis

As 'Supergirl' heads to the mid-season finale, here's a look at how the show has shaped up so far.
UPDATED NOV 25, 2019

It has been an intense season for CW's 'Supergirl' so far. Apart from the looming multiversal Crisis, danger was posed in the form of the mysterious Leviathan and Rama Khan. Supergirl herself has been rather busy. While Kara (Melissa Benoist) seemed a little on the sidelines for most of it, her fractured relationship with Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) became a focal point in the previous episode.  The show is all set to take on the Crisis on December 8. Yet, before that, the season has had several intriguing plot points and explored the dynamics between key characters.

Here's a look at how the show has shaped up before the mid-season finale.

Kara-Lena face-off

The Kara-Lena relationship has been a ticking time bomb this season. Lena Luthor is one of the intensely complex characters on 'Supergirl', and her story arcs tend to override Kara's, making Kara seem like a side character in her own show.

Lena finally revealed her true feelings about Kara concealing her identity as Supergirl in an incendiary dialogue. 'I was not a villain. You should not have treated me like one," she tells Kara and then leaves her to rot in a fortress. Lena has had enough betrayal and trust issues in her life, especially after her close friend Andrea Rojas (Julie Gonzalo) hurt her unintentionally by keeping the medallion that Lena had been hunting down for ages. This fight with Lena has left Kara miserable and heartbroken as it was not obviously her intention to break Lena's trust. Kara hasn't offered a proper explanation yet.

As she has been hurt so often, Lena's agony and resentment has driven her to Project Non Nocere, where she's determined to make unpleasant decisions to ensure that she doesn't ever face heartbreak again. However, whether it serves as a good excuse to justify her manipulations to push her project along, remains debated.

Leviathan

Before taking on the 'Crisis', 'Supergirl' has presented a new villain in the form of Leviathan, who seemed like a formidable and mysterious villain till now. However, the more we learned about the Leviathan in the previous episode, the less intriguing they become. The backstory of the Leviathan is this — their ship crashed into the Earth and killed the dinosaurs. Since then, they've taken it upon themselves to prevent humanity from destroying the planet. These aliens now want the medallion of Acrata, which is in the hands of Lena currently. It earlier was in Andrea's possession, as they had told her to keep it, and in return, they'll save her and dad from a financial crisis.\

In the episode, 'Confidence Women', Lena was furious when she discovered Andrea has the medallion as she had been hunting it for ages. She takes it back by holding Andrea's boyfriend Rip Roar hostage, and has no intention of giving the medallion back to the Leviathan. In the episode 'Tremors', Leviathan converts Rip Roar into a human bomb, who explodes almost killing Alex (Chyler Leigh).

For a while it seemed as if the white-haired woman (Patty Allan) was the head honcho of Leviathan. Turns out, that it's not the case. The real mastermind is Rama Khan (Mitch Pileggi). He is the real big baddie and does not bode well for Kara and her team.

Acrata

Comic book nerds would be familiar with the toughie Acrata. In the episode 'Confidence Women', after giving tantalising hints that Lena could have been Acrata, the show stayed true to the comics and Andrea Rojas emerged as Acrata, unwillingly, of course. Initially, it seemed as if Andrea was the real villain, but she obviously wasn't, and is revealed to be working for Leviathan against her will. She possesses 'darkness', as she is told by the white-haired woman, called Margot.

Andrea's broken friendship with Lena was another key point to understanding the latter, and what had led to her being so corrosively bitter in life.

And now, the 'Crisis' is round the corner, Kara needs to use all her strength to fight the villains and face the multiversal crisis that will change her life forever. The next episode of 'Supergirl' will air on CW, on December 1.
