Steven Spielberg denies plans for 'The Goonies' sequel, fans say the film is 'incredibly good on its own'
It has been 35 years since 'The Goonies' released and made a special place for itself in pop culture. Fans were overjoyed when they got to see the cast reunite in Josh Gad's 'Reunite Apart', where he raises funds for charity.
The first episode raised funds for the Center for Disaster Philanthropy to support their COVID-19 Response Fund. Gad welcomed the main cast including Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Ke Huy Quan, Martha Plimpton, and Kerri Green. They recalled fond memories of filming the movie and they also welcomed surprise guests in this special reunion.
Joe Pantoliano and Robert Davi, who played the villainous Fratelli brothers, appeared during the conversation along with writer Chris Columbus, executive producer Steven Spielberg, and director Richard Donner. Cyndi Lauper, who wrote the track 'The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough', also made a cameo. The cast enacted scenes from the film and shared behind-the-scenes stories.
And then something that fans have been waiting to discuss for a long time: The sequel. “Chris, Dick and I — and Lauren [Shuler Donner] — have had a lot of conversations about it,” said Spielberg. "Every couple of years we come up with an idea but then it doesn’t hold water."
He added that the cast and crew raised the bar on this genre so high that they weren’t able to find an idea that holds more ground than 'The Goonies' they made in the ’80s. He added, “Until we do, people are just going to have to look at this [livestream] a hundred times!” Donner playfully said, "How are you going to find seven miserable kids like this again that are new and fresh?”
Indeed, Spielberg is right. It's the age and era of sequels and reboots, where many well-loved films are being remade. Some are being met with praise, others not so much. Some belong to the age they were made in and it's best not to tamper with them. Although the news of 'The Goonies' not getting a sequel might be disappointing to some fans, others have praised the move.
A fan wrote on Twitter, "That Goonies reunion really made my day. And as much as I want a sequel I really appreciate the fact that they don't want to do it just to do it. It really has to be as good or better. Thank you @joshgad I'm excited to see what other shenanigans you get up to."
"Frankly, am happy there isnt sequel out there. The Goonies are sooo incredibly good on its own, and leaving the ending open like that makes fans create their own theories on how & what the goonies does with the ship and the cargo :) also, pls don’t make a remake, the film is gold," another fan tweeted.
Yes, we agree. Some films should just be left untouched.
