On Robin's 80th anniversary, let's talk about how unfairly Stephanie Brown was treated

Stephanie Brown's short time as Robin served mostly to further other people's stories and agenda and she deserved much better

Stephanie Brown has a complicated relationship with the Batfamily. The daughter of a supervillain, she was initially connected to Gotham's protectors though her relationship with Tim Drake, the third Robin. She had her own superhero identity as well, as Spoiler, and a well-lauded career as Batgirl, but she's also notable for being one of Batman's Robins. She is often overlooked and left out of the Batfamily reunions, often by her own volition — and it's easy to see why. Batman was horribly unfair to Stephanie during her brief stint as Robin and she deserved much better.

Since Robin's 80th anniversary just got over, it's worth taking a closer look at the most unfairly treated Robin of all.

When Batman took Stephanie on as Robin, he laid down one simple condition. If she messed up once, it was over. No mistakes, no do-overs and no excuses. A single failure on his watch would mean her having to hang up her bright yellow cape and domino mask. It's a rule that no Robin before or since has had to deal with. What makes the situation even worse is that when Batman appoints Stephanie as his new Robin, a surprised Alfred accuses Batman of only hiring Stephanie to lure Tim back into being Robin again. Batman doesn't deny it, which says everything.

Stephanie, of course, messes up. She disobeys a direct order from Batman when she enters a battle he told her to stay out of, allowing the villain to get away. True to his word, Batman immediately tells Stephanie that she can't be Robin anymore. And what's more? He forbids her from being Spoiler as well. It almost seems like deliberate cruelty on Batman's part, punishing Stephanie for not being a loyal soldier. He set Stephanie up to a nearly impossible standard, one he did not expect of his other Robins. It's not like Batman hasn't dealt with headstrong teenagers before — by that point, he has worked with three.

In an attempt to prove herself to Batman, she steals one of his more ambitious plans to unite Gotham's various gangs into a more peaceful arrangement, ending gang violence on the streets. This, unfortunately, does not go as planned and in the resultant gang war that followed, Stephanie is fatally injured. It was later retconned to be a faked death but it doesn't remove the feeling that she was only allowed to be Robin so that her death would have more impact on Batman's story.

Her time as Robin was never about her but about Batman's attempt to bring Tim back into the fold. Even her death was not her own. It was just a major point of guilt for Batman to have lost yet another Robin under his watch.

In the years since, Spoiler has proven herself as one of the most capable members of the Batfamily — both as Batgirl and as the on-again, off-again antagonist Spoiler. As Spoiler, she's even taken it upon herself to improve upon Batman's methods in keeping the city safe. There is no telling how far she could have gone had Batman actually believed in her instead of setting her up to fail. Nonetheless, she remains an iconic character and though her time as Robin was short, it's still a legacy she can lay claim to.
