‘Station 19’ Season 4 Episode 1 ‘Nothing Seems the Same’: What happened to Andy's mom, was she mentally unstable?
Can ‘Station 19’ finally put missing pieces of the puzzle back together? Back in Season 3, the show ended with a lot of loose ends and featured more deaths and doom than any other series. Will this season come with a beacon of hope?
Titled ‘Nothing Seems the Same’, the summary reads: "When the COVID-19 pandemic hits Seattle, the Station 19 crew leans on each other for support. Andy tries to make sense of her mother's return, while Sullivan settles into a new routine. And it's all-hands-on-deck when a group of teenagers unintentionally starts a wildfire."
While it remains to be seen how the series will tackle the breakout of the global pandemic on the show, one question on everyone's minds seems to be: How is Andy Herrera's (Jaina Lee Ortiz) mother Elena Herrera (Patricia De Leon) alive? In the Season 3 finale, Andy wasn't satisfied with her dad Pruitt's (Miguel Sandoval) explanations, so she sorted through his stuff and started looking for the things that weren't adding up. She called Aunt Sandra Alvarez (Laura Ceron) and that's when Andy's mom joined them. What really happened to her and why did her dad keep it a secret for all these years?
Talking to TV Insider, executive producer Paris Barclay said her mom's arrival "will be complicated [for Andy] but not devastating in the way that viewers might expect." In an interview with TV Line, Ortiz teased, "Everyone wants answers... You'll definitely get them in the premiere, I guarantee you." She added, "They may not be what you expect, but it'll definitely be something huge and dramatic and, obviously, very traumatic because [Elena being alive is] not the only... elephant in the room. COVID-19 is a huge part of the storyline."
"I can't give you any details!" Ortiz told ET Online, before offering a clue. "She checks herself into a psychiatric hospital. It will be extremely intense and shocking, and I feel like her personal life, her family life on top of the pandemic will definitely [be dramatic]." That seems to be a hint. Maybe Andy's mom was suffering from mental health issues and that is why her father hid it.
Directed by Paris Barclay and written by Kiley Donovan, the episode might feature a jaw-dropping beginning but could also bring some solace in Andy's life. After her father's death, she needs a guiding force and having her mother by her side might be a huge help. Why did her mother hide all these years? That is something we need to look forward to.
Catch the crossover episode on November 12 that airs at 8 pm ET on ABC as ‘Station 19’ Season 4 leads into the ‘Grey's Anatomy’ Season 17 opener.
