'Star Wars: Resistance' Season 2 Episode 6: 'From Beneath' channels charismatic chicken characters as Flix reunites with family
It’s hard to say, for sure, what Season 2 of 'Star Wars: Resistance' is about, especially given that their primary goal of meeting with the Rebellion was abandoned out of necessity quite early in the season. Subsequent episodes have felt like diversions to the main plot, despite the lack of one, and ‘From Beneath’ is another such diversion. That being said, however, ‘From Beneath’ brings a lot of fun to the screen, both in terms of its amusing characters and some genuine action-thriller moments as the team discovers a nest of monsters deep beneath the surface of Drahgor III.
The plot for the episode is fairly straightforward - the Colossus is in need of fuel, and the closest source of fuel happens to be a refinery owned by Flix’s (Jim Rash) family on Drahgor III. When Flix left home, it was apparently not on the best of terms, meaning he’s going to have to come to some kind of reconciliation with his family before the Colossus can be refueled. Meanwhile, Flix’s family have bored deep into the planet, ignoring an old legend of dragons deep beneath the surface, and this has led to several quakes. Kaz (Christopher Sean), Torra (Myrna Velasco), and Flix’s boyfriend Orka (Bobby Moynihan) accompany Flix’s cousin down into the mines.
There is no other way to put this: Flix’s family is adorable. Officially, they are Gozzos, but they’re basically just long-legged chicken people, like Flix himself. The new Gozzo in charge, Flix’s cousin Flanx (the ‘Fl’ is apparently a Gozzo naming tradition) is voiced by Paul F. Tompkins, who has a ball of time gloating over Flix’s need for help. The banter between Flix and Flanx is half the fun of the episode - the characters feel like cousins used to not agreeing on anything despite their familial bond. The resentment between them is obviously not enough to get in the way of them reconnecting with each other by the end of the episode.
The other half of this episode’s focus is on the dragons. The show gives off serious ‘Jurassic Park’ vibes, especially considering that standing still renders a person invisible no matter how close the reptilian beasts are. The show’s animators really get to stretch their legs here, playing with light and darkness deep within the mines - bright light being the monsters’ biggest weakness. Say what you will about the plotting of ‘Star Wars: Resistance,’ the visuals are always a compelling sight.
There’s a little fault to be found in this episode. It’s fun, it’s entertaining, and it’s well-performed. It’s just that it’s hard not to wish the show would drum up a seasonal goal. The Colossus is currently floating uselessly in space, and now that it’s gotten the fuel it needs hopefully the show and it find a way to actually go somewhere.
The next episode of ‘Star Wars: Resistance’, ‘Relic Raiders’ airs on November 17, at 6 pm ET/PT on Disney XD and 10 pm ET/PT on the Disney Channel.
