'Star Trek: Lower Decks' Episode 8 Preview: Tendi and Rutherford are joining the crew's special ops

It's a clash of Upper and Lower Decks, as a 'highly classified' mission sees the ensigns take on new and unfamiliar responsibilities

Life on the USS Cerritos isn't always about the glitz and glamor of warp cores and the latest in communicator tech, every now and then the crew has to get their hands dirty and launch themselves right into the thick of things, as D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) and Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) are about to find out. The Upper Deck crew appear to have some important jobs for the lower decks to fill and the sudden shift in responsibilities does not go smoothly for anyone involved, on the next episode of 'Star Trek: Lower Decks.'

The preview for the next episode, entitled 'Veritas', sees the Lower Decks crew take on some serious Upper Deck responsibilities and some of them are adjusting to things a lot worse than others. Last episode 'Lower Decks' saw Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis), Jack Ransom (Jerry O'Connell) and Shaxs (Fred Tatasciore) ditch their official uniforms for an all black ensemble for an all important mission - making sure some very specific seedlings were planted just at the right time. Just the kind of high-stakes special ops missions the Cerritos is known for!

The next episode sees Shaxs bringing Tendi and Rutherford into the same uniform for a "highly classified" mission, however, implying either that last episode's operation was not as successful as they'd hoped or that Tendi and Rutherford are in for a dangerous mission of their own. Though Tendi appears to be getting into the swing of things with a few punches swung at unidentified enemies, Rutherford is seen having a little trouble with the concept of stealth and not drawing attention to himself.

Back on the Cerritos, Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) have been made to serve on the bridge along with Captain Freeman, and a little bit of miscommunication between Freeman and Mariner may just have sparked an intergalactic war. It turns out that there's an important distinction between firing phasers at another ship and inviting its occupants for dinner - though in Mariner's defence, Captain Freeman's order to "send a message" does leave a lot open to interpretation.
