One of the world's premier music streaming platforms, Spotify, has revealed that the annual Spotify Awards will be held for the first time ever on March 5 this year in Mexico City.

According to an official statement released by the company, the criteria for determining the winners of these inaugural awards will be 100 percent based on the user-generated data of Spotify users in Mexico. What this means for music lovers is that the musical tastes and listening patterns of every Mexican Spotify user will be analyzed and used to decide the winners.

The inaugural Spotify Awards will broadcast live on March 5 via Telemundo in Mexico and Universo in the United States.

It is understood that 12 main categories will be showcased on the television broadcast of the event, but they will mostly be focused on Mexican and Latin American artistes, given that the finalists are determined by Spotify’s collated data on streams, follows and playlist adds in the Mexican region.

The event will be hosted by Mexican actress and singer Danna Paola, along with comedian Franco Escamilla, mariachi artist Ángela Aguilar, and Luisito, a well-known Mexican traveler and online creator.

This year the Spotify Awards will recognize artistes in 62 musical categories, including Artist of the Year, Most-Streamed Female Artist, Emerging Artist, Most Added to Playlist Artist, and Most Streamed Mexican Artist globally.

Bad Bunny is leading with 13 nominations with two of his hits — 'Callaita' and 'La Cancion' — up for top song honors. He is followed by popular artistes Banda MS, J Balvin and Daddy Yankee, who have 10 nominations each. Other notable finalists include Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Alejandro Fernández, Ozuna, Luis Miguel, Maná, Reik, Guaynaa, Natti Natasha, Karol G, Sech and Paulo Londra.
