Spoilers for 'Snowpiercer' Episode 4 'Without Their Maker'

After three gripping episodes, 'Without Their Maker' brings the Sean murder plot to an end. But as the cliched line goes, the end is just the beginning for Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs). For those who realized Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly) has a sinister side, their theories were proved right this episode as she harbors a secret that Layton might have just figured out. Irrespective, the detective's future looks bleak.

Erik (Matt Murray) and LJ Folger (Annalise Basso) were "close", reveals Folger's father, when Layton and Melanie investigate the first class for the death of Nikki Genêt (Madeleine Arthur). Despite Lilah Folger (Kerry O'Malley) attempting to disrupt the investigation, Melanie fakes a call to Mr Wilford and gets permission to check the Folgers' private quarters. Parallelly, Bess Till (Mickey Sumner) and John Osweiler (Sam Otto) resume a hunt for Erik after deducing he's hiding in third class.

'Without Their Maker' is a pacy affair and also throws light on Melanie's ulterior motives. The plan was to never let Layton go back despite finishing the mission and any sliver of hope to rescue him is now on Josie Wellstead (Katie McGuinness), who already uses the chip to get a good look at the train's workings. As far as the murder case goes, it is revealed that LJ and Erik planned the murder together and the former carried out the orders. With LJ locked up, there is still a sense of unfinished business.

That the first class was involved in the crime was not a surprise considering the route Layton's investigation took. However, the mystery comes to a rather abrupt end when they round up the killers. Erik's unsuccessful attempt to escape by using a hostage fails as the police brutally hack him to death. The episode also sees Susan Park's Jinju get a new lease of life after being taken hostage by Erik. Her romance with Till has been something of a revelation in the series.

The focus will now surely shift to Melanie and Layton. It shouldn't come as a surprise if Josie and the tail formulate a rescue plan for Layton, but the question is will they get through Melanie? The episode is a breezy affair as there's less talk and more action. With the mystery tied up, it is safe to assume the remainder of the season will be all about Melanie and her attempts to keep her secret safe.

'Snowpiercer' airs Mondays at 9 pm ET on TNT.
