Snoop Dogg’s debut album ‘Doggystyle’ was released under the label Death Row Records in the year 1993 and guess what, the rap icon now owns the record label that first paid him. In a rare moment of life coming full circle, the hip-hop legend on Wednesday, February 9, announced that he acquired Death Row Records which was once owned by Suge Knight. Whilst the terms of the deal have not been disclosed, the ‘Gin & Juice’ hitmaker bagged the record label deal from MNRK Music Group, a firm that is controlled by private equity funds managed by Blackstone.

Social media users could not keep calm as they thronged to Twitter to congratulate the 50-year-old rap veteran for his boss move. Death Row Records was founded in the year 1992 by Dr. Dre, Suge Knight, the D.O.C., and Dick Griffey. It soon shot to fame after releasing music from Dre, Snoop, and Tupac Shakur among others. However, the record label filed for bankruptcy in 2006 and was auctioned to WIDEawake Entertainment for $18 million in January 2009.

‘Extremely meaningful moment for me’, says Snoop Dogg

Speaking in an official statement, as published by The Hollywood Reporter, Snoop stated, “It feels good to have ownership of the label I was part of at the beginning of my career and as one of the founding members. This is an extremely meaningful moment for me.” The iconic rapper who later went to sign with No Limit Records, Interscope, Capitol, Geffen, Priority Records, and Def Jam added, “I would like to personally thank the teams at Blackstone, MNRK and especially David Kestnbaum, who worked collaboratively with me over several months to make this exciting homecoming a reality.”

According to TMZ, the rapper stated, “I am thrilled and appreciative of the opportunity to acquire the iconic and culturally significant Death Row Records brand, which has immense untapped future value. It feels good to have ownership of the label I was part of at the beginning of my career and as one of the founding member.” Dr. Dre’s ‘The Chronic’, Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle’, Tha Dogg Pound’s ‘Dogg Food’, and Tupac Shakur’s ‘All Eyez on Me’ are some of the top albums released under the label of Death Row Records in the 90’s. Snoop will also be releasing an album called ‘B.O.D.R.’, an acronym that stands for “Back on Death Row,” in partnership with Gala Games.

‘Snoop Dogg owning Death Row is the best revenge ever’

Reacting to the big news, one user stated, “Snoop Dogg gaining Death Row Records, ultimate ironic moment of the century!”  Another chimed in, “Snoop getting Death Row records is really a full circle moment.. I know Suge Knight is ramming his head on his jail wall.” One user added, “Snoop Dogg owning Death Row is the best revenge ever.”

The next one shared, “Without getting into too much of the paperwork, Snoop buying Death Row 30 years after it was launched is a moment. “Deep Cover” with him and Dre dropped in April ‘92 — a few days after the LA Riots we’re officially declared ‘over.’ A lot of history and symbolism here.” Whereas, one user added, “So dope that @SnoopDogg bought back death row records. west up.” And, another concluded, “Congrats to snoop for getting death row records in his hands.”
