SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA: An estate with neo-classical Mediterranean design, which served as a school in the 2001 Anne Hathaway movie 'The Princess Diaries', is currently for sale. The building is well recognized for serving as Grove High School's façade in the film about a shy, clumsy teen who transforms into a hot royal highness.

The palace, a showpiece of San Francisco architecture, allegedly needs a new owner, according to Wall Street Journal. The building that served as a high school in the movie where Julia Andrews played Clarisse Renaldi, the grandmother of Mia Thermopolis (played by Hathaway) and the Queen and Regent of Genovia, is actually a home. Also, the firehouse Hathaway called home in the film was most recently sold in 2015 for $1.9 million, according to Realtor, and is no longer available on the market.

Who are the sellers?

The property was bought by the sellers, former Just Desserts CEO Michael Mendes and his wife, Wendy Berry, in 2009 for just under $6.4 million. Their daughter, who was 7 at the time, was a die-hard fan of 'The Princess Diaries', but this did not help her parents negotiate a better price for the property.

Mendes stated, "It was a bit unfortunate because we were trying to negotiate a good price," according to Wall Street Journal. Mendes and Berry are selling the property to make a work-related transfer to the East Coast. Together with Mendes, former San Francisco Giants owner Bob Lurie is another former deed holder of the property.

The mansion, which is presently demanding $8.9 million, and its "acclaimed occupants (both real and imagined) certainly make it among the most beloved homes in our city," Compass agent Steven Mavromihalis, who holds the listing alongside Jessica Grimes, told New York Post. Mavromihalis added, "There is a kind of romance to the home that will surely attract prospective caretakers for whom beauty and harmony really matter."

What does Grove High School look like in reality?

The structure, which has breathtaking views of the bay and the city to the north and east as well as quiet forested panoramas to the west, is situated at 2601 Lyon Street, on the easternmost point of the Presidio Wall, at the intersection of Pacific Heights and Cow Hollow, according to Compass.

The structure, which turns 100 this year, has been designed to balance the comfort and ease of modern comforts with the historic architectural intricacy of the house. It includes various formal public areas, four bedrooms, three full and one-half bathrooms, an office, media room, and elevator, in addition to a double-curved Beaux Arts staircase, a Juliet balcony with arches, and three windows.

Additionally, it features a separate entrance to a finished lower-level gym/office/media room with storage, a finished one-car garage with a laundry closet, an adjacent mechanical room, and a storage closet, as well as a panoramic roof garden with city and bay views that includes an outdoor kitchen, heaters, and fire pit. The 4,500 square feet of space is divided into more than 12 rooms in total.
