Behar questioned why it was "the actor's obligation" to check their handgun for live ammunition during a discussion of the charges that will be filed against Baldwin in the 2021 shooting death of 'Rust' cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on production. The liberal co-host of 'The View', however, also suggested a conspiracy theory in which Baldwin's well-known liberalism is held responsible for his legal troubles. According to a video published by Fox News, She said, “Also, you know, the DA who is indicting him, or whatever the legal term is right now, she's a big Republican, I’m only saying this because Alec Baldwin is a target for Republicans. They can’t stand him.”

The host was however forced to apologize for her this statement as the allegations made by her were bogus, Mary Carmack-Altwies, who serves as district attorney of Santa Fe, is a Democrat. Behar returned in the following episode to make a half-hearted correction. “Clarification [on] something I said last segment,” she said. “It's the special prosecutor who's now the Republican politician in New Mexico, and not the current DA. I get them mixed up sometimes. So, sue me.”

'It must be very sad to be Joy Behar'
