'Shark Tank' Season 15: Barbara Corcoran invests in The Fidget Game to make learning with dyslexia more accessible
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Investor Barbara Corcoran asserts that learning difficulties are not a drawback in either business or life; they can even be advantageous.
"This is kind of a cause for me," Barbara claimed on the November 17 episode of ABC's 'Shark Tank' Season 15 on Friday.
Determined to overcome the limitations of dyslexia, Barbara Corcoran invested in The Fidget Game, a company offering focus-enhancing toys for children. The game aspires to make a meaningful impact on the lives of young and impressionable minds.
According to Entrepreneur, Barbara discovered her own disability after her child was diagnosed in the second grade. Barbara also revealed that her daughter has ADHD as well.
"Everything I've ever done in life has been to prove that I'm not stupid," Barbara told People. She added, "I've had dyslexia my entire life. It has an impact on you."
She claimed that working with her infirmity made her stronger.
"It made me more creative, more social, and more competitive," Barbara told Entrepreneur, "There’s a great freedom to being dyslexic … if you can avoid labeling yourself as a loser in a school system that measures people by A’s and B’s."
She is now looking to invest in others who have done the same.
'Shark Tank' investor Kevin O'Leary struggled in school due to dyslexia
Kevin O'Leary faced extra challenges in school as a child due to his dyslexia. The impact of dyslexia on his academic performance surfaced during his time at St George's School, where he grappled with reading, as well as basic addition and multiplication problems.
Lack of awareness about dyslexia led him to depend on additional aids to stay on par with the curriculum.
'Shark Tank' investor Daymond John faced challenges of dyslexia throughout his life
Daymond John built his wealth and business empire from the ground up, being the force behind the successful apparel label FUBU. In addition to his entrepreneurial success, he is an author, coach, and speaker with a global presence.
What makes his journey remarkable is that Daymond has faced the challenges of dyslexia throughout his life. He only learned about the condition that impacted his reading abilities during adulthood.
Reflecting on his childhood, Daymond remembered his mother having him read The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal to her on Sundays, thinking it would give her a head start on the upcoming work week.
This unconventional practice proved beneficial for his reading comprehension and understanding of the power of words.
Interestingly, despite his achievements, Daymond's own father initially perceived his academic struggles as slacking in school.
