System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian announces bespoke HEX backpack which comes with its own musical score

An augmented reality app can be used to unlock brand-new music from the System of a Down vocalist by scanning the front of the bag

We all knew Serj Tankian was a multi-faceted genius. After successfully branching out into metal, jazz and classical music, political activism, and most recently, film scoring, the System of a Down frontman has now decided to team up with the tech-savvy fashion label HEX to create a sleek, stylish backpack that can also be used to unlock original artwork and previously-unreleased music from the Armenian-American musician via an augmented reality app.

The practical, everyday backpack was designed by HEX with Serj, who travels all over the world. Features include a plush-lined laptop pocket, separate tablet pocket, a hidden earbud pocket, and a host of internal pockets for hard drives and other tools of the music trade. In order to unlock the exclusive music content, you will have to use the augmented reality app, Arloopa. With Arloopa, you can point to the front of the bag with your phone's camera and unlock new, never-before-heard music from Tankian.

"I like the idea of listening to physical objects and having a musical score to them, it’s just a new and interesting thing that I’ve been working on," Tankian said in a press release. "I started painting about four or five years ago because I was interested in seeing what my music looked like. So all of my pieces are musically scored, activated by an optical recognition app you can download called Arloopa. So you can actually walk into a gallery or wherever with your smartphone, point it at a particular painting and be able to hear it.”

Here's Serge talking about the process of collaborating with HEX below:

"It has been such an honor to work with Serj on this collaboration. He is among the most creative people I have met, and moves so easily between music, art, and technology," said Trent Valladares, HEX co-founder. "We're also extremely proud of the bag, it's got everything that a frequently traveling musician could want."

The Hex backpack can be purchased for 199.95 dollars here, and then used with the augmented reality Arloopa app to access the exclusive artwork and musical content from Serj Tankian. Fans of the versatile SOAD frontman's originality and innovation are encouraged to BYOB and Buy Your Own Bag!
