As Scott Cawthon announced his retirement via a post on his website on Wednesday, June 16, Twitter slammed the animator for being a 'homophobe'. Cawthon's retirement comes almost a week after he was slammed for his political and religious views. This was after screenshots viral on the internet indicating that he made plenty of donations to former president Donald Trump and to the Republican party.

"Turns out scott cawthon, well-known as the creator of five nights at freddy's and less known as being a christian fundie, maxed out his political donations to republican candidates and PACs in 2020," an internet user, who identified themselves as the 'Chief Imagineering Officer of Antifa', wrote while sharing the controversial screenshot.

Social media sleuths alleged that the animator donated to GOP politicians such as anti-LGBTQ+ senator Mitch McConnell, Tommy Tuberville, Kevin McCarthy and Ben Carson. Cawthon, who has a massive reported net worth of $60M, has a cult fan following as the creator of 'Five Nights at Freddy's', for which he provided the voice of Phone Guy.

Is Scott Cawthon anti-LGBTQ?

After the accusations, the Houston-born and Austin-based creator followed up on Reddit to defend his stance. “I’ve debated greatly how best to address this, including not addressing it at all, but with so many people from the LGBT community in the fanbase that I love, that’s not an option," he wrote. “I’d like to think that the last seven years would have given me the benefit of the doubt in regards to how I try to treat people, but there I was, trending on twitter for being a homophobe, getting doxed, with people threatening to come to my house.”

“I’ve never cared about anyone’s race, religion, gender, or orientation,” Cawthon wrote. “I just treat people as people, everyone the same, and because of that, I’ve ended up with a very diverse group of people that I’ve worked with over the years.” He added: “Even if there were candidates who had better things to say to the LGBT community directly, and bigger promises to make, I believed that their stances on other issues would have ended up doing much greater harm to those communities than good."

He said: “I’m a republican. I’m a Christian. I’m pro-life. I believe in God. I also believe in equality, and in science, and in common sense. Despite what some may say, all of those things can go together. That’s not an apology or promise to change, it’s the way it’s always been.” Cawthon concluded his message by saying: "I have always loved, and will continue to love, this community and this fanbase, even if someday it doesn't include me anymore."

In his Wednesday, June 16, retirement message, Cawthon added that he was shown "tremendous love and support over the last week, a lot of which has come from the LGBT community", and said that the kindness people showed him was "surreal".

'Gay people rejoice'

However, LGBTQ+ gamers were unhappy that the FNAF mastermind has been funding politicians who are known to be against LGBT+ rights. "Gay people rejoice scott cawthon retirement," said a Twitter user. "Reminder to all LGBT/BIPOC FNAF fans: Scott Cawthon literally donated to the worst republicans who do the most harm to minorities and women. He donated to people who want you dead. He donated to people who tried to overturn the election," said another.

"Scott Cawthon believed in funding anti-LGBT politicians so strongly that he's quit his job rather than quit donating or apologize. Whatever else, that's the takeaway: he loves giving money to the GOP more than his fans or his games. "Spend more time with his family" my ass," a third chipped in.

'Thank you Scott. We didn't deserve you'

Others supported the animator and mourned his departure. "#ThankYouScott Thank you for carrying me and my childhood. I cant believe its over. To the people who made ScottCawthons life hell along with his family's, fuck you. Leave Twitter and never come back," said a fan. "scott cawthon is a republican but hes perfectly fine with lgbt things but people are getting pissed at him anyways," said another. "Thanks, Twitter. You made Scott Cawthon, one of the most chill guys in the world, retire himself. I hate this community. You don't have to destroy everyone that carries a different opinion. Thank you, Scott. We didn't deserve you," a third added.
