‘Rick and Morty’ Season 4 may have ended, but we already know that the show is far from over. As has been widely reported before, fans can be sure of at least a total of 60 episodes in the future. In a ten-episode-per-season format, as is usual for the Dan Harmon-Justin Roiland animated comedy, that would mean confirmation for seasons 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.

Release date

While there was a substantial delay between season 3 and season 4 due to contract negotiations with Turner Broadcasting, ‘Rick and Morty’ fans are unlikely to have to wait too long for the fifth season.

Roiland told Slash Film in an interview that the upcoming season is “mostly in the can”. Asked about a possible split-season as we saw for the fourth one, Roiland said, “I believe if they have the full 10 episodes, they'll release them without a split, but I honestly have no idea.”

Roiland further said, “I've been saying we should drop an episode each month, just make it a big event. If you do one a month, the show is alive the whole year and you're still buying us all the time we need to make them as good as they need to be.”

No official date for season 5 of ‘Rick and Morty has been announced yet.

Plot

While ‘Rick and Morty’ is usually a cluster of independent episodes with the grandfather-grandson duo going on unconnected adventures, there are serialized elements to the show as well, something we saw in the season 4 finale.

The finale, ‘Star Mort: Rickturn of the Jerri’ saw the return of various older characters and plot points like the Gromflomite Galactic Federation, Tammy, and Birdperson (now known as Phoenixperson0). We also saw the show confirm something that has only been speculation so far, there is a Beth clone. And that Beth clone is now an intergalactic terrorist. The episode ended with the Smith family now having two Beths. That is sure to play an important role in season 5.

First Look

On Friday, July 24, Adult Swim dropped the first look for ‘Rick and Morty’ Season 5, it introduces Rick’s nemesis. And it’s one we have never seen or heard of ever before.

In an unfinished clip from ‘Rick and Morty’ Season 5, which debuted during the show's Comic-Con@Home Panel, we see the opening of an episode. But there’s a lot going on. Rick is bleeding, on the verge of dying. While Rick has been in mortal danger many times in the past, this seems to be one of the rare occasions when he isn’t hopeful of a recovery.

As he despairs, Morty takes over the spaceship, vowing to save Rick. Together, they barely escape from what appears to be a Cthulu-like creature and they enter a wormhole that brings them within Earth’s reach. By the time they enter the atmosphere, Morty too is preparing for the inevitability of death. In what he believes are his final moments, he calls the girl he has always had a crush on, Jessica, to tell her how he really feels.

Unexpectedly, Jessica seems to reciprocate his feelings. She says that she never took the first step because she was never sure of how Morty felt and said, “Nervousness is a kind of selfishness.” She even agrees to go on a date with him. With this, Morty finds new hope to live. And with great effort, he is able to steer the ship into a bouncy tree that prevents a straight collision with the planet. The ship then lands in the ocean.

And that’s where Rick’s nemesis, Mister Nimbus, comes in. He’s an Aquaman-looking person who informs that by stepping into the ocean, Rick broke a treaty. While we have never seen or heard of Mister Nimbus, it is apparent that they have been enemies for a very long time.
