SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH: The 'Bad Mormon' author is reportedly being sued by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints also known as the Mormon Church. Ahead of Heather Gray's memoir release, the book has already caught itself in the midst of controversy over its title 'Bad Mormon'.

The church is allegedly trying to stop the 'Real Housewives of Salt Lake City' star's book from "reaching bookstores." Why is Heather Gay being sued?

Heather Gay is being used over the title of her autobiography, 'Bad Mormon'. A source claimed the reality star remains locked in a long bitter legal battle over the title of the book with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. "The church retains its trademarks on multiple variations of the term Mormon," as per the outlet.

How did the legal battle start?

Heather Gay filed a trademark application on the words 'Bad Mormon' to endorse beer mugs, shirts, and socks. The LDS church opposed the applications over claims that the trademark was created "to cause confusion, tarnishment, and dilution," according to New York Times. Moreover, the church alleged that using the word "bad" is "deceptive in that it falsely represents that Opposer, the Church or its members are bad or otherwise behaving immorally or contrary to the teachings of the Church," reported the outlet.

Furthermore, despite the lawsuit, the 'RHOSLC' star maintained she is "not scared" of any consequences pertaining to the release of her book. "When the book comes out, there will be no path back," the TV personality stated as she admitted not having any clue about what the "fallout" would be, reported Daily Mail. The lawsuit is set to be resolved in court in May 2024.

The mother-of-three also admitted in 2019 that she is "happier than" she's "ever been" after stepping away from the church. "I didn’t get hit by lightning," the author recounted first parting ways with the Mormon Church. The reality star first parted her ways with the church after her divorce from husband Frank William "Billy" Gay III. She cited the reasons for leaving the church for its treatment of the LGBTQ community and wanting her three daughters to be able to "live and love freely."
