The Chinese period drama is about a brother Ning Qiao, Ning Yi (Chen Kun) who is out for vengeance when he realises that something about his brother's death doesn't add up. In his path to retribution, he meets Feng Zhiwei (Ni Ni) who he befriends and later in the show falls in love with. Feng Zhiwei, on the other hand, has her own reasons for getting involved in the political conflict. Initially, she only wants recognition for her intelligence, then she wants to protect her mother and brother, who are used as pawns in a larger scheme of political unrest. It is much later that she realises her true identity, and seeks revenge for the many people she has lost because of the current King Ning Shizheng's regime. The show is currently on Netflix and is 70 episodes long. Originally aired on Hunan TV, The Rise of Phoenixes did not receive a great reception in China, however, gained a huge fan base after the extended version was made available on Netflix. The show is loosely based on the novel Huang Quan, penned by Tianxia Guiyuan.
