'The Rise of Phoenixes' starring Chen Kun and Ni Ni in the roles of Ning Yi and Feng Zhiwei respectively has stolen the hearts of many for its portrayal of royal politics, romance and especially the production design. While the show did not fare well in Mainland China,t he uncut version that was aired on Netflix, however, changed the fate of the show. It became a huge hit among foreign audiences. 1. Nirvana in Fire
The show originally aired in 2015 and featured Hu Ge, Liu Tao and Wang Kai in starring roles. The series based on the book of the same name is written by Hai Yan and is one of the most popular Wuxia (stories based on heroes who perform martial arts in ancient China) film in recent times. Directed by Kong Sheng and Li Xue, it is a tale of a man, Lin Shu, who enters the palace under an alias to disprove that his family was traitorous. He wants to find what really happened 12 years ago when his family was labelled as traitorous. The show consists of 54 episodes and is available on streaming service Rakuten Viki. There is also a sequel to this show titled 'Nirvana in Fire: The Wind Blows in Chang Lin'.
2. Legend of Fuyao
Based on the book 'Empress Fuyao' by Tianxia Guiyuan, this 2018 Chinese show is about a Fuyao, a woman born from a divine lotus petal. She goes in search of magical artefacts across the Five Kingdoms to rid herself of a curse and meets the crown prince during one of her searches. The crown prince is entrusted with keeping the peace between the kingdoms. This also happens to be another show which did not fare well domestically but received acclaim from overseas fans for the show's technical aspect and fairly decent character representation. The show is on Rakuten Viki and consists of 66 episodes.
3. Story of Yanxi Palace
The world's most googled TV show in 2018, Story of Yanxi Palace is based on the novel of the same name authored by Zhou Mo. The series is about a young maid, Wei Yingluo, who enters Qianlong Emperor's court as an embroiderer to find the truth behind her sister's death. How she allies herself with the Empress Fuca to help her own secret mission is interesting as events unfold over 70 episodes. Directed by Hui Kaidong and Wen Deguang, the show stars Wu Jinyan, Charmaine Sheh, Qin Lan, Nie Yuan, Xu Kai and Tan Zhuo in important roles. The show is available on Rakuten Viki.
4. Tribes and Empires: Storm of Prophecy
This 2017 Chinese drama is an adaptation of the novel by the same name written by Jin Hezai. The show which features Shawn Dou, Huang Xuan, Zhou Yiwei and Xu Lu in important roles is set in a fictional world where Novoland Duan Dynasty has ruled people for over 200 years. A young prince Muyun Sheng is cast aside and isolated as he was born of a spirit mother, but when his brothers and the emperor die many years later, he is forced to take the throne. How he fares as a king and the other characters who play a part in adding to the ongoing conflict makes this show an interesting watch. The show which consists of 75 episodes is available online.
5. Ashes of Love
'Ashes of Love' aired at the same time as 'The Rise of Phoenixes' on Jiangsu TV and was comparatively more successful due to its lead cast and straight storyline. The show based on the novel 'Heavy Sweetness, Ash-like Frost' by Dian Xian is about two brothers who fall in love with the same woman and end up fighting for the throne of the Heavenly Realm. Featuring Yang Mi, Deng Lun and Luo Yunxi in starring roles, it is directed by Chu Ruibin. Yang Mi plays the role of Jin Mi grape fairie who is actually the daughter of the Flower Goddess and Water God. Deng Lun plays the younger son of Heaven's Emperor Xu Feng and is the Fire God. He is also the legitimate heir to the throne. Luo Yunxi plays the role of the eldest son Run Yu, who is the Night God. This show is also available on Rakuten Viki and has 60 episodes.
