Hip-hop star Post Malone recently announced that he would be giving his fans a special treat by playing a special set dedicated to grunge rock icons Nirvana on Friday, April 24. The special will air on Post Malone's official YouTube channel at 3 pm PT / 6 pm ET and will serve as a fundraiser for coronavirus relief efforts.

It won't just be Nirvana tunes, as Post Malone revealed that he would perform a set of Nirvana and fan favorites while observing social distancing protocols from his home.

Malone's goal is to raise $5 million for the United Nations Foundation’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, organized in collaboration with the World Health Organization.

Tech giant Google has pledged to match every dollar donated with their own dollar contribution, up to a $5 million amount, with all proceeds going to the United Nations fund.

This rock tribute comes as no real surprise since Post Malone is well known to be a big fan of rock and metal music. Besides teaming up with Ozzy Osbourne several times in the recent past, Post used to be in a metal band prior to becoming a world-famous solo star and has even covered Nirvana songs like 'All Apologies' in the past.

Nirvana was one of the most popular hard rock bands in the early '90s, first breaking through into mainstream consciousness with their multi-platinum album 'Nevermind' in 1991. The trio helped propel the heavy, sludgy genre of grunge rock into the forefront of the guitar-based rock revival era.

The popularity of their chaotic-yet-melodic tunes owed a lot to their charismatic frontman Kurt Cobain, who succumbed to the pressures of rock stardom by tragically taking his own life in April 1994.

Rising out of the ashes of the Nirvana legacy, their drummer, Dave Grohl, would go on to form his own successful band, Foo Fighters, which helped introduce catchy rock anthems to a new generation of listeners.

The 'Rockstar' singer shared a teaser preview clip of the live YouTube show on his social media, and even encouraged his fans to "text 817-270-6440 for more info."

Kurt Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, also gave her blessings for the special event, saying “Thank you @postmalone @who ( worldhealthorganization) & @google who will match 5 million $ in donations. Thank you beloved @coreresponse and the amazing @nhs (profound to watch this amazing health care system working = inspiring )."

"Thank you mighty kc [Kurt Cobain] for writing these songs with your elegant and monkeyed hands that the kids still want to sing and play and hear and use to fight and hunt and cure and heal and eradicate this f**king covid19 virus. I approve the usage. Good luck Mr Malone."
