Patrick Mahomes & Brittany Matthews: From Westinghouse High School to Hawaii via the Super Bowl
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend Brittany Matthews in a luxurious Hawaiian ceremony on Saturday, March 12.
The high school sweethearts shared the happy news of their union with identical posts on Instagram featuring Sterling, their one-year-old daughter. Mahomes' brother Jackson was his best man at the ceremony. Prior to the nuptials, Matthews and her girlfriends took a trip to Miami, where they spent time doing goat yoga and sunbathing on a yacht.

According to Us Weekly, the Texas teenagers started dating in March 2012 while attending Whitehouse High School in East Texas, where Mahomes was a sophomore and Matthews was a junior. The duo were friends for a year before Mahomes gave Matthews a Valentine's Day card and a rose in the cafeteria. They went on to attend multiple school dances together, including Matthews’ senior prom in May 2013. Mahomes shared photos from the night via Instagram, writing, “Best prom date a guy could ask for!! #prom2013 #bestfriend #greatnight."
The couple ensured they kept the spark alive while attending colleges in Texas. Mahomes played football at Texas Tech University from 2014 to 2017, while Matthews played soccer for the University of Texas at Tyler from 2013 to 2017. In February 2016, he gifted his girlfriend a puppy for Valentine's Day. Mahomes forwent his final year of eligibility as a college quarterback to enter the NFL draft in April 2017, when he was picked by the Kansas City Chiefs as their first-round pick and the 10th overall pick.
“Officially a Kansas City Chiefs fan! I'm so proud of you Patrick!” Matthews gushed on Instagram at the time. “I cannot wait to take on this amazing journey by your side!❤️ I love you lots!” Matthews landed her own gig with Iceland’s pro soccer team just a month after Mahomes signed with the Chiefs, with her lover by her side when she signed the contract in May 2017.
In May 2019, the couple bought a home together in Kansas City -- a $2 million mansion with three bedrooms, three baths, a home gym, and a pool, according to American City Business Journals.
In February 2020, the couple was seen celebrating Kansas City’s Super Bowl win with a midfield kiss. “I am so beyond proud of this dude and this team, all year it was about battling, amazing comebacks, and overcoming an injury, and for that, YOU DESERVE THIS,” Matthews wrote alongside a series of photos after the victory. The following month, Matthews celebrated the couple's 8 year anniversary on Instagram. “8 years ago, you played safety & I was a cheerleader in a small town called Whitehouse, TX. Oh, how times have changed! Love you❤️.”
The Chiefs' QB proposed to Matthews in September 2020 after more than eight years together. He took a knee in a VIP box at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City in front of a sign reading, "Will You Marry me?"
Just weeks after getting engaged, the couple revealed that they were expecting their first child together. “Mom & Dad, taking a small detour to the wedding❤️,” Matthews wrote while sharing a photo of the pair holding a sonogram.
In October 2020, the pair revealed that they were having a baby girl, setting off confetti poppers while their friends and loved ones virtually watched the announcement amid the Covid pandemic.
The footballer announced the arrival of his daughter Sterling on February 21, 2021. "Sterling Skye Mahomes 2/20/21," he wrote on Instagram, sharing a pic of his newborn's hand with his and Matthews'.
In October 2021, Matthews defended her then-fiance after the Chiefs lost against the Buffalo Bills. She bemoaned in an October 10 tweet how the "Refs are never in our favor.” A fan subsequently responded, "Girl, I need you to stop," to which Matthews wrote, "In the nicest way possible… Shut up,” along with a smiley emoticon.
In January this year, Matthews celebrated her husband's victory as the Chiefs beat the Bills in the AFC Divisional Round NFL playoff game. The Britney Lynne Fitness founder shared a clip of herself popping a bottle of champagne and spraying fans in the Missouri stadium. "Chiefs Kingdom, YALL ROCK🔥💯," she captioned the Instagram post.
