Ozuna's new album 'Nibiru' scores No. 1 debut on Top Latin Albums chart signaling a seismic shift for pop

It's three out of three home runs in a row for the 'New King of Reggaeton', who is now a bigger superstar than Justin Beiber
UPDATED DEC 12, 2019

Latin American music is back in a big way and currently ruling the global pop charts. There hasn't been such an explosion of Spanish-speaking pop stars in the US mainstream since the turn of the millennium, when iconic acts like Ricky Martin, Enrique, Marc Anthony, and Jennifer Lopez became household names.

And despite them owning the airwaves back then, most of their chart-topping hits were sung almost entirely in English.

But of late, there has been a steady, significant influx and evolution of bona fide música urbana in the global market.

The impact of burgeoning stars like Bad Bunny, Ozuna, Maluma, J Balvin, Rosalía, Nicky Jam, Luis Fonsi, and many others, have catapulted genres like Latin trap and reggaeton to the top of the US streaming charts. And that trend appears to be here to stay.

One of the biggest artistes on the planet right now is Juan Carlos Ozuna Rosado, who merely goes by his surname Ozuna. The Puerto Rican-Dominican rapper is widely regarded as the "New King of Reggaeton".

He has already released two successful albums, 'Odisea' (2017) and 'Aura' (2018), which have accumulated around 15 million record sales, making him one of the bestselling Latin music artistes of all time.

Last week, Ozuna scored yet another No. 1 debut on the Top Latin Albums chart with his latest offering 'Niburu', making it his third straight entry on top of the list. The album is chock-full of groovy dancefloor bangers and features musical celebrity guests such as Sech, Diddy, DJ Snake, Anuel AA, Swae Lee, Nicky Jam and Snoop Dogg.

It earned over 17,000 equivalent album units in the week ending December 5, according to Nielsen Music. That translates to over 20.4 million on-demand audio streams and the fifth largest debut for a Latin music album released in 2019.

"I feel very grateful to God for another great blessing," Ozuna told Billboard. "The audience's support for this new production fills me with much satisfaction and joy," he said. To say he's a bigger superstar than Justin Beiber isn't even an exaggeration anymore.

Earlier this year, Ozuna usurped the King Joffrey of pop when the music video for 'Taki Taki' became the seventh video featuring him to surpass over a billion views on YouTube, a new record that eclipses Beiber's already impressive tally of six.

And in September, he notched up his 13th No. 1 on the Latin Airplay chart with 'Te Soñé De Nuevo.' To listen to his latest No. 1 album, 'Nibiru,' click here.
