LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Jamie Lee Curtis, who won her first-ever Oscar at the 95th Academy Awards for her role in the movie 'Everything Everywhere All At Once', spoke to reporters backstage about her hopes for more women to be recognized by the Academy. The 64-year-old actress also called for genderless categories to support artists who don't conform to the binary gender system. This issue is particularly important to Jamie, as her daughter Ruby came out as transgender in 2020.

"Obviously I would like to see a lot more women be nominated so that there's gender parity in all the areas and all the branches, and I think we're getting there," said Jamie, according to People. She added that while progress has been made, there's still a long way to go.

"We're not anywhere near there. And of course, the inclusivity then that involves the bigger question, which is, how do you include everyone when there are binary choices, which is very difficult," Jamie continued. "As the mother of a trans daughter I completely understand that," she said, referring to her daughter Ruby who came out as transgender in 2020 and got married in 2022 with Jamie officiating. The host of 'The Good Friend' podcast, emphasized her desire for more female representation in all aspects of the industry by stating, "I want to see more women anywhere, everywhere and all at once."

'I just won an Oscar!'

Earlier at the 95th Academy Awards, the 'nepo baby' was overwhelmed with emotions as she won her first-ever Oscar in the Best Supporting Actress category. Jamie, the daughter of Hollywood legends Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, dedicated her award to her famous parents during her heartfelt acceptance speech. While on stage, Jamie referenced her family's history with the prestigious award ceremony and said: "And my mother and my father were both nominated for Oscars in different categories — I just won an Oscar!"

Jamie's mother, Leigh, received a nomination in the same category as her daughter for her iconic role in Alfred Hitchcock's horror classic 'Psycho' (1960), but the award ultimately went to Shirley Jones for 'Elmer Gantry'. Meanwhile, her father, Tony, was nominated for his performance in the 1958 drama, 'The Defiant Ones', but the honor went to David Niven that year.

'A mess and a fool'

Social media was abuzz with reactions as Jamie Lee Curtis won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the 95th Academy Awards. Many viewers expressed disappointment that Jamie won over Stephanie Hsu and Angela Bassett. One user tweeted, "Of course the #Oscars reward white mediocrity because in what world did Jamie Lee Curtis give a better performance in comparison to Stephanie Hsu or Angela Bassett?" Whilst, another tweeted, "Me watching jamie lee curtis win an oscar for what is, essentially, a glorified and forgettable cameo over the other more deserving best supporting actress nominees."

A creator tweeted, "Last thing I’m gone say about this. Stephanie Hsu’s audition was more interesting than Jamie Lee Curtis IN THE MOVIE!" Several users also pointed out the issue of racism, with one tweeting, "Jamie Lee Curtis winning a f**king OSCAR for her nothing role in EEAAO over Stephanie Hsu who was the ACTUAL supporting actress and Angela Bassett is fucking racism and a career award that isn't even deserved." Another user tweeted, "I’m sorry but it’s fucking hilarious that they gave Jamie Lee Curtis an Oscar for one of the biggest Asian-led movies of all time." A disappointed user wrote, "Jamie Lee Curtis wasn’t the best supporting actress in the movie she was in. How she beat her co-star AND Angela? A mess and a fool."
