British epic war film '1917' is the fan favourite for the best film this year. Starring George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman with Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Colin Firth and Benedict Cumberbatch, the movie is a huge deal among fans for its long takes that make it appear as one continuous shot.

The movie is contending with 'Ford V Ferrari', 'The Irishman', 'Jojo Rabbit', 'Joker', 'Little Women', 'Marriage Story', 'Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood' and Parasite for the Best Picture win. However, Roger Deakins, cinematographer of '1917' says that if the South Korean black comedy thriller (Parasite) directed by Bong Joon-ho wins tonight, it is "deserving" of the award.

"How do you judge between the two movies? They're so different. 'Parasite' is brilliant," the cinematographer said while making an appearance on the red carpet.

"If ['Parasite'] wins bet picture, it deserves it. It is a brilliant movie."

On the other hand, fans of the movies are appreciative of solidarity. "Love how we can uplift a film without tearing down another!" tweeted one. "You're goddamn right Sir Roger Deakins!!!" tweeted another.

"The man has taste! Immense talent and taste! noted a fan of the cinematographer.

Directed by Sam Mendes with Roger Deakins serving as the cinematographer, '1917', set during the World War I, is a story of two young British soldiers who are tasked with delivering a message to call off an attack that is doomed to fail soon after the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line during Operation Alberich in 1917.

The movie is also competing in the categories of Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
