Who is Olivia Rodrigo's ASL interpreter? Singer praised for her thoughtful action at Grammys
Olivia Rodrigo has not only been hailed for winning three Grammy awards at the 64th Grammy Awards on Sunday, April 3 but her decision to walk the red carpet with a sign language interpreter has also been praised. The 19-year-old is the first major Filipina-American pop star to receive three Grammy Awards — one for best new artist, second for best pop vocal album for ‘Sour’ and the third one was for pop solo performance for her hit ‘Drivers License’ — after being nominated for seven different categories.
Though she was poured with congratulatory messages all over social media for her big wins, there were many who also noted her thoughtful action to bring an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter. A fan tweeted, “I could cry watching @oliviarodrigo talking on the Red Carpet and having a sign language interpreter with her.” Another one wrote, “Love that #OliviaRodrigo has a sign language interpreter with her. #GRAMMYs.” “Olivia rodrigo being the only artist on the carpet to have a sign language interpreter though… 🥺 i love her,” the third one said.

Who is Olivia Rodrigo's ASL interpreter?
The identity of Rodrigo's ASL interpreter is not known yet but she was seen beside her as the songwriter gave interviews to the reporters. Rodrigo dazzled in a black sheath gown with a pink trompe l’oeil silhouette from Vivienne Westwood. She was also reportedly seen rocking matching gloves for the Sunday event. The ‘deja vu’ singer has earlier spoken about her insecurities during her initial days in the industry. She had revealed that she used to think only White girls can become popstars. “I sometimes get DMs from little girls being like, ‘I’ve never seen someone who looked like me in your position.’ And I’m literally going to cry. Like just thinking about it. I feel like I grew up never seeing that. Also, it was always like, 'Popstar', that’s a white girl,” she told the V Magazine feature in August 2021.
In the same feature, Rodrigo also talked about the pressure of being a woman in pop music. She noted, “There’s this pressure for young women in pop music. And it’s like this thing where you’re only successful if you’re under 30. I’ve always resented that because I think I’m just going to get better with age. You know what I mean? I’m just going to become a better songwriter and know what I want to say more...I think that’s actually a really fun, exciting part of being in the space that I’m really encouraged to sort of have different eras and reinvent yourself.”
“And I think that’s so much fun, and I am so inspired by so many different genres of music. I love country music so much, and I love rock music so much. And obviously, pop music is my favorite. And another thing that I think is really special is that, in 2021, I feel like artists aren’t really boxed into a genre anymore. I look at someone like Billie Eilish, who I’m so obsessed with, and her music is like pop, but it’s kind of rock, too,” the singer added.
