NSYNC embraces 'It's Gonna Be May' meme, trolls Justin Timberlake by renaming epic song on streaming platforms

The song's misheard lyric became a viral meme nearly a decade ago and has since resurfaced to celebrate the beginning of May every year

When NSYNC released 'It's Gonna Be Me' back in 2000 as part of their 'No Strings Attached' album, they probably couldn't have predicted the song's everlasting impact on pop-culture, which is immortalized in the annual celebration of 'It's Gonna Be May' day.

Starting in 2012, 'It's Gonna Be May' day took root after fans turned Justin Timberlake's pronunciation of the word 'Me' in the song's lyrics into a meme. Since then, every year on April 30, fans celebrate the beginning of May with iconic memes and universal merry-making.

The band joined in on the tradition last year itself when they tweeted, "Ok let’s seem them! Who has the best meme? (sic)" resulting in a stream of gems including this one, which reads, "Roses are red / April is grey / But in a few days," followed by a picture of Timberlake. There are also several images of instant noodles as a throwback to when Timberlake sported the infamous 'ramen noodle hair'. Even major corporations jumped in on the fun, including Snickers when it once tweeted, "If you’re using a @BackstreetBoys meme to announce that it’s gonna be May, you’re probably hungry. #EatASNICKERS."

Bandmate J C Chavez also once hilariously reminded the audience and fans worldwide that it was "gonna be May" while the group was being honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 30, 2018.

This year, however, the band appears to have upped the ante with their shenanigans.

On April 30, NSYNC changed the name of their hit song 'It's Gonna Be Me' across streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music to 'It's Gonna Be Me (It's Gonna Be May)'. They retained the original title on YouTube, but the video now has the hashtag #ItsGonnaBeMay attached to it as well.

And if that weren't enough of a celebration, member Joey Fatone hopped on Instagram to remind us all that it is, in fact, time for May by sporting a t-shirt that reads: 'It's Gonna Be May'.

At a time when the world is dealing with uncertainty due to an ongoing pandemic and the resulting isolation, it appears the NSYNC classic from two decades ago is still capable of bringing us all a little joy. In addition to reminding us what date it is, of course.
