Noah Baumbach took the opportunity at the 2020 Golden Globes to gush about his partner and Oscar-winning director Greta Gerwig's latest film 'Little Women'. But at the same time, he also couldn't help but remark on the lack of female directors recognized at the awards.

The 'Marriage Story' told People how he supported Gerwig throughout the filming of 'Little Women' — the movie adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's phenomenal classic about four sisters' coming-of-age story of the same name.

Admitting how emotional he got in the process, Baumbach shared that when he watched the film for the first time it was a challenge to hold back his emotions. “That’s a movie I start crying almost from the beginning to the very end,” he said at the 77th Golden Globe Awards. “There’s so much emotion in it. It’s funny and it’s dramatic. You can tell it comes from the heart. It’s beautiful.”

Gerwig's adaptation of the classic stars Laura Dern, Florence Pugh, Saoirse Ronan, Meryl Streep, Emma Watson, and Timothée Chalamet. The film bagged a solid two nominations on this year's Golden Globes.

Yet, despite the rave reviews from critics and viewers alike, and the whopping 95 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, everybody was left shocked when the film couldn't score a nomination for Gerwig herself in the best director category — something that has been common with a lot of female directors this year.

Noting the same, Baumbach opened up to Variety about how disappointing it was to see the lack of female representation.

“So many of my favorite movies this year were made by women — Greta’s 'Little Women' being one of them,” he told Variety. “I’ve been so excited by the work that so many women have done.” As for Baumbach's own brainchild, the Adam Driver, Laura Dern, and Scarlett Johansson starrer 'Marriage Story' bagged a leading six nominations for this year's award ceremony.

Among other happy news, he and Gerwing also welcomed a son together back in March 2019. The two first met when Baumbach cast her to star opposite Ben Stiller in his 2010 film 'Greenberg'.

The 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony aired live on NBC from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on January 5.
