Nick Cordero not responding even though his eyes are opening up, says wife: 'We need him to follow commands'

Nick Cordero's wife Amanda Kloots has said that the 41-year-old actor is doing better in his recovery from coronavirus-related complications. Kloots took to Instagram Live on Monday, May 4, and said Cordero's doctors believe he is making "good progress" following a tracheostomy procedure.
She also mentioned that the Tony Award-nominated star opened his eyes after he was taken off sedation. “The doctors say Nick is looking good. His settings on everything are getting better, so there's good progress. And now we just need him to wake up,” Kloots said on social media.
"We need him to follow commands. Look left, look right. His eyes are opening up. Unfortunately, they're not connecting to anything but small, little steps," she said.
Continuing, Kloots, who shares 10-month-old son Elvis Eduardo with Cordero, revealed that she is in talks with other people whose near and dear ones have recovered from Covid-19 to "get an idea of the mindset of when they wake up out of a coma and what they remember”. She called the discussions "super helpful".
“One of the things they said is that the first step is that the eyes open. The second step is that the eyeballs sort of track (movement). We are at eyes open, which is great. We just need, like, the mental status to kick in,” Kloots said while talking to her followers in the live session.
Cordero’s right leg had to be amputated on April 18 after coronavirus complications. After this, his recovery has seen a lot of ups and downs.
Last week, his wife said that the ‘Broadway’ star was bleeding internally and his blood count dropped “really, really low”. Appearing virtually on ‘CBS This Morning’ on Thursday, April 30, Kloots said: “Today was supposed to be putting in a trach (breathing tube) and a feeding tube. Unfortunately, this morning, his blood count was really, really low. Low blood count can mean that he’s internally bleeding from somewhere, so now we have to wait.”
Before that, Cordero also got an infection in his lungs that spread to his blood, causing him to go into "a little bit of a septic shock" after developing a fever. “We had kind of a bit of a rough day yesterday. This kind of came out of nowhere after two days of really great progress,” Kloots had said earlier in a video posted on her social media page.
The fitness instructor also mentioned that despite these setbacks, her husband is now "back to feeling better" and "resting" following the ordeal. "We kind of just wait and see. He is throwing us through some loops, that’s for sure,” she added.
Cordero was first admitted to Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on March 31 with respiratory problems. Initially, he was misdiagnosed with pneumonia. However, later he tested positive for the coronavirus.
Though since the surgery, the actor has tested negative for the novel coronavirus, his wife recently revealed that his lungs have become “severely damaged”. “They're that damaged. There are holes in his lungs where obviously you don't want holes to be."
“So this kind of was found because his oxygen count went down and so they kind of went down and deep into the lungs. They cleaned out his lungs again. It wasn't as bad as a couple of days before, but they had to clean out his lungs again,” Kloots added.
