And finally! There is a new 'Star Trek' movie in the offing and the same was confirmed by JJ Abrams during the Paramount Investors Day Presentation on Feb. 15. That's not all. Chris Pine might just return as Captain Kirk in the movie. The crew was first seen in 2009's 'Star Trek,” directed by Abrams himself. The actors returned in two sequels, 'Star Trek Into Darkness' (2013) also directed by Abrams, and 'Star Trek Beyond' (2016) directed by Justin Lin.
"We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new ‘Star Trek’ film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take ‘Star Trek’ into areas that you’ve just never seen before," Abrams said during the presentation. "We’re thrilled about this film, we have a bunch of other stories that we’re talking about that we think will be really exciting, so can’t wait for you to see what we’re cooking up. Release date
Although there is no release date confirmed, the film is slated to go on floors in late 2022. Expect the movie to perhaps land in the fall of 2023 or early 2024.
Cast
With Paramount in talks with 'Wonder Woman' star Chris Pine to reprise his role as James T. Kirk, the idea, per Deadline, is to also get the rest of the crew back. Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Lieutenant Uhura, Karl Urban as Dr. Bones McCoy, John Cho as Sulu, and Simon Pegg as Scotty, will all be tapped.
Plot
The plotline is reportedly under wraps and details about what the movie is about will only probably trickle when there are more developments on the cast front. However, watch this space for more updates.

Per Deadline, "Paramount and producer J.J. Abrams hired Matt Shakman to direct, fresh from the triumph of the Marvel/Disney+ series WandaVision, just after the series was nominated for 23 Emmys. Shakman has been supervising a draft by Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires, based on a draft by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet."
