'New Amsterdam' Season 3: Dr Shin's style of working is bound to irk Dr Max, will there be a fallout?
Spoilers for 'New Amsterdam'
The end of Season 2 saw NBC's 'New Amsterdam' shelve their 'Pandemic' episode to be sensitive to the unexpected reality that hit. However, they did release 'Matter Of Seconds' as the Season 2 finale which introduced new head trauma surgeon Dr Cassian Shin played by Daniel Dae Kim. The series also ended the romance between Dr Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) and Alice (Alison Luff).
While many focused on the possibility of Max being with Dr Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman), the series cut out the #Sharpwin fandom pretty quickly. It seems as though Dr Shin and Dr Sharpe may have a thing going on. Romantic relationships aside, we also saw the way Dr Shin conducts himself — he's a chill guy, that puts "self-care" at the top of his lists.
Sometimes, it seems as though he tries to take care of himself first, rather than his patients. While Dr Max is an understanding guy and a very competent and intelligent one at that, we can only foreshadow the possible clash between the two. Max has a way of doing this around the hospital, and it seems that Shin may disrupt that. Are we going to see a fallout between the duo in the upcoming Season 3?
Besides, the romantic drama that will only assume with ensuring Shin's chill attitude towards things in the hospital that he isn't personally affected by might rub Max the wrong way. If Max has to also see the woman that fans claim he's supposed to be with, Sharpe, date Shin — then we know that drama is going to be the center of Season 3.
Creator and executive producer David Schulner told TV guide that even though we can expect Max and Shin to "clash going forward," Max does respect him "even if their contrasting philosophies mean some friction ahead." Although it is interesting to point out that we expect to see the pandemic episode in the third season, and in the midst of all that, even if romance isn't on anyone's mind, work ethic would matter.
All we know of Shin is from 'Matter of Seconds' where he tries to explain to Sharpe why "self-care" matters. While that may be true, a pandemic requires constant attention from doctors all around. So, how will Shin fare in all the chaos? Will Max think that Shin has what it takes to be the head trauma surgeon? Schulner said, "I don't think romance is going to be on his mind [going forward]. Or maybe it could be: sex and death are very closely linked. After being so close to this pandemic anything is possible."
If you're all caught up with the medical drama, then you, by now, would understand the way Max does things in the hospital. He employs the motto, "How can I help?" making the patient a priority and encouraging that the staff work as a team. At times, under his leadership, staff have broken rules to help patients and looked past certain things when another task is important.
Shin, on the other hand, doesn't seem like a man that's ready to employ this way of working. While Max is almost hell-bent on trying his best to cure every patient that comes in, in need of help — Shin doesn't do that.
While Shin is impeccable in his talent (or he wouldn't have been hired), he makes it a point to not only take care of himself first but only indulge in situations where he can help, instead of all situations that come his way. It is literally the opposite of how Max thinks. So, to say in the least, Season 3 will possibly see some serious drama between Shin and Max — professionally and maybe personally.
There is no set release date for 'New Amsterdam' Season 3. Stay tuned for updates.
