Who is Queen Latifah?
The lead actress of 'Hustle,' Dana Elaine Owens, better known by her stage name 'Queen Latifah,' was born on March 18, 1970. She was born and raised in the public housing projects of Newark, New Jersey, the daughter of Rita, a schoolteacher who worked at Irvington High School, and Lancelot Owens, a policeman. Her parents divorced when Latifah was ten. The name "Latifah," meaning "kind" in Arabic, was given to her when she was eight by her cousin. This American musician and actress was a member of the all-female rap group Ladies Fresh in her high school. She has studied Communications at the Borough of Manhattan Community College.
In 1988, DJ Mark the 45 King heard a demo version of Latifah's single 'Princess of the Posse' and gave the demo to Fab 5 Freddy aka Fred Braithwaite, who was the host of Yo! MTV Raps. The recording captured the attention of Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross, who immediately signed Latifah, and in 1988 issued her first single, 'Wrath of My Madness.' The following year her debut album, 'All Hail the Queen,' hit the market. Soon after, Queen Latifah founded her own management company. Her second album, 'Nature of a Sista' (1991), however, failed to match the sales of her previous effort.
However, in 1991, Queen Latifah also made her big-screen debut in 'Jungle Fever,' and this led to several television gigs. Latifah’s Hollywood career peaked in 2003, when she received an Academy Award nomination (best supporting actress) for her portrayal of Matron Mama Morton in the big-screen adaptation (2002) of the stage musical 'Chicago.'
In 2007, Queen Latifah again delighted movie-goers with her musical talents. She appeared as Motormouth Maybelle in 'Hairspray' with John Travolta. On the small screen, Latifah has made a number of guest television appearances over the years, including on shows like '30 Rock' and 'Single Ladies.' She also co-starred in the 2012 TV remake of 'Steel Magnolias' with Alfre Woodard. In 2021, Queen Latifah was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BET Awards.
What is 'Hustle' all about?
The show is all set to release in June and has already enough fans waiting to watch it because of the prominent actors in its cast list. Adam Sandler marks his ninth Netflix starring role with 'Hustle,' in which he plays the rule-breaking scout. The other cast members are Robert Duvall, Ben Foster, Jordan Hull, Ainhoa Pillet, Maria Botto and former NBA player Kenny Smith.
