'My Feet Are Killing Me' Season 4: Dr Brad avoids numbing shots for his trypanophobic patient Karen

Karen, Dr Brad Schaeffer's new patient, has unusual feet, with extremely long toenails and a strange-looking callus in the heel area. She approaches him intending to permanently remove the callus without the use of numbing injections.

Dr Brad is concerned about how deep the callus in his patient runs, since it can occasionally reach the point of contacting bones in her situation. The patient discloses that she hasn't seen a foot doctor in 15 years, something she is quite upset about. When the callus is pressed, it hurts. Karen sees Dr Brad with her grandson, Michael, in the hopes of receiving permanent therapy that does not need any injections.

Karen can't walk because her toes are like claws. Karen's toenails are not only thick, but they also curve around the tips of her toes, resembling a talon or claw. When she initially arrived at Dr. Brad's clinic, her left foot was rather prominent. Even though she has unpleasant claw-like nails, the callus on the bottom of her foot is the most bizarre. Dr. Brad sees that the callus is extraordinarily thick, like tree stubs, yet when Dr. Brad presses to examine, there is no discomfort around the toes. To begin, the doctor notices that she has unusually thick fungal toenails, which he intends to remove on the first day.

Dr Brad observes that the callus resembles a cutaneous horn, which is a lot of keratin, which is our skin, that accumulates over time, much like the bark on a tree. She is acquiring extremely hard skin that is forming into a stock-like look. If it is not cared for, it will eventually grow longer and cause great agony. In Karen's instance, there was tiny, small corn that had grown for years and was causing too much discomfort for the patient. Dr Brad decides that Karen's illness will not necessitate surgery; in other words, no numbing injections. He intends to clip the nails and then remove the cutaneous horn by shaving it down gently.

Dr Brad observes that not every procedure needs the use of numbing injections; for Karen, he intends to take his time and move down through the callus slowly so that he does not have to use a needle on her. He soaks it briefly to keep it wet while he works on the fungal nail. He jumped directly into the cutaneous horn after the nails, heeding Karen's warning to Dr Brad not to dig too deep. Dr Brad continues to peel off each layer of Karen's cutaneous horn, which has proven to be a difficult task for him.

Dr Brad soaked Karen's foot and applied moisturizer before working on the callus region, but he still had to break a sweat. As Dr Brad gets to the bottom of it and extracts the corn, he promises Karen that she will be able to walk about pain-free. After removing super-manageable toenails and calluses, Dr Brad advises Karen to apply topical antifungal cream every day after showering for improved results. He also advised her to shave down the callus with a pumice stone to ensure that it stayed in place.

While some other fans feel she should be taking more care of her feet so that she doens't have to return to Dr. Brad's office only to thank Jesus. Another fan who didn't like the idea how Karen kept praising Jesus while Dr Brad did all the work. They shared their views on the matter: "Jesus not taking care of your feet Miss Karen. . Stop praising him when it is a trained podiatrist trying to help you without involving needles. Thank Jesus for bringing @DrBradleyDPM in your life and removing that horn. #MyFeetAreKillingMe" A curious fan took to Twitter to ask Dr Brad about the monstrous callus on Karen's foot. The tweet read: "@DrBradleyDPM you need more Karen's on your show!! She was GREAT! And holy hell that hole was deep. How long does a hole like that that take to heal over? #thankyoujesus #lordisonyourside #myfeetarekillingme". One fan went on to compare the callus on Karen't foot to sinkhole. They tweeted: "Karen’s foot look like it got a sinkhole at the bottom of it #MyFeetAreKillingMe".
