'What the actual f**k': 'Mulan' fans erupt after Disney+ asks them to pay $30 to watch film at home
After several months of wondering about Mulan's theatrical release, Disney+ has finally given its definitive answer. For a $29 premium subscription, Disney will forgo a theatrical release and provide viewers the opportunity to watch the movie at home. While many are overjoyed at being able to watch the film from the safety of their homes, there are many others who believe that the announcement is a blow to the film.
Fans have taken to Twitter to express their disappointment, reigniting the debate about whether or not films deserve to wait for a theatrical release. "@Disney @DisneyStudios
is making a huge mistake by putting #Mulan on @disneyplus. The actors deserve their big screen moment. Why the rush? It’s totally unfair. What about the rest of the world? Mulan can be released next year. Stop acting like there aren’t 365 days in 2021," says one user.

"Ridiculous. This is a shameful act of sabotage. May as well be shooting that arrow straight at cinemas. Of course studios will still make piles of money after all is said and done but this cultural vandalism is unforgivable," says this user.

One fan believes that this is the start of a new trend. "It shows that everyone with the exception of Christopher Nolan and exhibitors realises its idiocy to open any major releases until October at the very earliest; if Tenet underperforms, it's going to spook all other studios and more films will be delayed until 2021."

Others are firmly in support of the move. "There's no end date for a pandemic. They can't just hold on to these movies for 20 years. If you want to be angry be angry at this administration that let this s**t get out of control. There's real lives on the line here - not just movie theaters," writes another fan.

With the pandemic showing no signs of slowing down, this very well might be the model other films may be forced to take up. The success of 'Mulan' will determine just how well this model will work but if the fans are any indication, opinions on how good a move this is trending decidedly unhappy.
'Mulan' will be available to watch on Disney+ on September 4, 2020, with a theatrical release where Disney+ isn't available.
