MTV VMA nominations reflect changing times, include Best Quarantine Performance and Best Music Video From Home
The MTV VMAs aka MTV Video Music Awards have just released their new list of nominations for their highly-anticipated annual awards ceremony that will be held at the end of August. In a reflection of the changing times we live in, alongside standard categories like Video of the Year, Song of the Year and Artist of the Year (there are 15 gender-neutral categories in total), we also have two brand-new categories in, Best Quarantine Performance and Best Music Video From Home, which no doubt will have fans pleased that MTV is keeping themselves up to date with our current restricted climate. MTV had previously revealed 17 nominees for their PUSH Best New Artist category last week, although the nominations have now been reduced to just six artistes on their official site.
The main ceremony for the 2020 MTV VMAs will be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn (besides presentations from various other locations in New York) on Sunday, August 30 at 8 pm ET, and will be available for viewing and streaming on MTV's linear and digital platforms. Fans can now vote up to 20 times a day for their favorite artistes in each of the 21 different categories over the next few weeks, until voting closes on Sunday, August 23. However, voting for the PUSH Best New Artist category will remain open until the day of the ceremony, i.e. August 30. You can check out the full list of categories and artiste nominations on their official site by clicking here. MTV encourages you to cast your votes and then come back the next day so you can vote again, and thus propel your cherished artistes to the top of the pecking order.
There are no surprises when it comes to the big hitters on the list, with the popstars Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga both nabbing a stunning nine nominations each over the various categories. Both singers famously collaborated together on the song 'Rain On Me', so they're certainly going to be cheering each other on. Elsewhere, music sensations like the pop princess Billie Eilish (who just released a brand-new track 'My Future' on July 30) and the Canadian R&B star The Weeknd have received six nominations apiece, so there's plenty to be excited about. All four of these artistes have received nods in the hotly-contested Video of the Year category, so it'll be interesting to see who nabs the big prize. Here's the full breakdown of the various award categories below:
